Lead Character

Leonardo is an example of a lead character in the film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Leonardo is the leader and eldest of the Ninja Turtles. His role as the lead character includes taking care of his brothers' safety. The lead character is very important to the story because they keep the audience engaged and interested in whats going on and keeps the story alive.

Supporting Characters

Viola Davis is an example of a supporting character because in Fences she isn't the main character but she helps the story progress and is mentioned enough to be more then a minor character or cameo appearance.

Background Characters

Background characters are characters that are just there to make the screen look full and to give aesthetic pleasure to the viewers (or in the case of the picture provided) the player. Like in Street Fighter the characters in the background are only meant to make it look like people are watching.
