Project 5 CGT Example 3

this project is an ongoing project detailing the progress I make using rigs to animate inside of Maya. While starting with a few references to project 4 (the pose project), it will continue passed it to include a walk cycle, a run cycle, and if time allows even a sprint jump cycle. Right now we're in the process of creating the run cycle in another class, so that won't be featured here today. Instead we'll focus on the pose project and the walk cycle project.

The Pose Project

The pose project was one of my most favorite CGT projects yet. Wanting to be a 3D animator meant learning how a very complex animation rig worked was super important and fun to me. You can see some images of that project, as well as a link to it's own page, down below.

The Walk Cycle Project

The walk cycle project was the second rigged animation project we completed in Jason's animation class, and my favorite CGT project to date. It required us to take a fully rigged demo model and animate him walking as realistically as possible.

All five major poses in the animation

The animation required five major poses, 1 and 5 being identical contact poses, 2 and 4 being in-between poses, and 3 being a passing pose (where one leg was as high and as bent as it would get). This required movement of bones throughout the entire body, especially the legs and spine. It was a learning experience for me because Jason showed us just how complicated a walk cycle actually is and how many steps it takes to create even the most simplistic looking normal walk cycle.

And with the original walk cycle completed, its now time to move on to this class's final project... the run cycle!

The Run Cycle Project

Two different styles of running animation

The run cycle project actually asks for two different run cycles, one more realistic run cycle, and a second, more cartoony and exaggerated run cycle. The task is to take this rig:

the rigged man

and animate him as closely to those poses as possible (remembering that those flow charts only show one half of the animation and need to be mirrored to the other leg to complete the animation). This is what I'll be working on for the next week and adding to this project as I complete it!
