Andalucia & The Algarve May 2018

Some might say that the white hill towns or Pueblos Blancos are the heart and soul of Andalucia. They are gorgeous, charming, and tranquil; by contrast, they served as an intricate and powerful communication network that provided defense of an advancing enemy attack.

Ronda was built on a towering plateau with beautiful vistas. The iconic New Bridge that straddles a lush canyon with fabulous terraces offers stunning views from every angle. Ronda Romántica, La Real Feria de Mayo is an event that has taken place ever May since 1509 and the costumes are truly nostalgic.

Cordoba is a living breathing museum. The mezquita and catedral are the center attractions of the city and mind blowing by their own right, but the tiny streets of the historic center and area along the Guadalquivir River are fantastic and not to be missed.

It seems that Seville likes to push the limits of architecture and the Metropol Parasol or “the mushrooms” at Plaza de La Encarnación is a striking example of human ingenuity. This structure, contrasted against the buildings of Old Seville, is quite stunning and inspiring.

The coastline along The Algarve in southern Portugal is breathtaking. Mother Nature has done an amazing job of sculpturing these picturesque lagoons, beaches, and grottos. Lagos is a lovely beach city that offers great vistas, memorable excursions, and fantastic kayaking.

When most people think of The Algarve, Praia de Marinha near Lagoa is probably what comes to mind. It’s postcard perfect. Erosion from the golden limestone cliffs has created soft expansive beaches with crystal clear turquoise waters.

Praia de Benagil is a small beach and launch site for some of the most amazing excursions to beaches only accessible by boat. Algar de Benagil or "the eye", is truly one of the most amazing places in the world that is reminiscent of the Pantheon.

Tavira is a lovely resort town near the Portuguese border with Spain. Although most of the gorgeous buildings are from the 18th century, the church dates back to the 13th century. The clock tower and bridge are lasting evidence of its moorish legacy.

As they say “April flowers bring May flowers”. Springtime in the countryside of Andalucia and The Algarve is just incredible. It’s an herbalists paradise. At times, the aroma of anise, jasmine, and helichrysum is overwhelming.
