A former logging town, Bend and Central Oregon are now making a name themselves as a high-tech hub (along with being a renowned tourist destination.) Forbes Magazine in 2017 named Bend the "Best Small City for Business and Careers" while Apple and Facebook have set up data farms in the rural town of Prineville. The Milken Institute ranked Bend atop its "Best-Performing Cities" index that ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. The components include job, wage and salary, and technology growth. Bend was listed among the New York Times' 52 Places to Visit in 2016; featured on the cover for Outside Magazine's "Best Towns" issue in 2017, while the region's stellar mountain bike trails were home to BIKE Magazine's hugely popular "Bible of Bike Tests" issue in 2015.
