NEA-Salina March Newsletter 2017

4 Ways to #BeTheHero

NEA-Salina President Jonathan Eshnaur

1. The ruling on school finance by the Kansas Supreme Court has four important key points. First, the CLASS (known as block grant) did not meet the adequacy standards as laid out in the Kansas Constitution. Second, the legislature must create a new funding formula by June 30, 2017. Third, the new formula must include funding for the needs of all students, including but not limited to exceptionalities and impoverished, that can meet the Rose Standards. Finally, if a new school finance law is not passed by June 30, 2017, Kansas schools will be forced to close.

2. NEA-Salina is preparing for our annual elections. Positions up for election are as follows; NEA-Salina delegates to the KNEA-Representative Assembly, three-year term, Alternates to the NEA-Representative Assembly, for that summer, and NEA-Salina Officers, president, vice president, secretary are one-year term and treasurer which is a two-year term. If you would like to run or would like more information, please email Dustin Burgardt.

3. The Kansas Supreme Court ruling shows why it is important to stay engaged in the political process in Salina, Topeka, and Washington D.C.! The next Salina Legislative Forum is Saturday, March 18 at 8:30 a.m. in the Salina Chamber of Commerce Annex. I encourage you to attend. Whatever you do, do not give up. Those who wish to dismantle public education want you to do exactly that. I believe together with collective action we can advance Quality Public Schools for Every Student!

4. Do you donate to Kansas Political Action Committee (KPAC)? This volunteer fund helps elect education-friendly candidates to the Kansas Legislature and Kansas Executive branch. .

Get to Know Your Agreement

NEA-Salina Educator Rights Advocates

It is that time of year again; we scroll through the board notes to see who is retiring or who is moving on from USD 305. NEA-Salina wants to make sure you know what your agreement says to protect you in any situation at this time of year.

The agreement states that certified staff need to give notice by June 6th. If you do NOT give notice by that date, you need to be aware of the liquidated damages you may incur:

June 6- June 30: $1,000 in damages

July 1 – 3rd Friday of the following May: $3,000 in damages

If you are retiring under the “Phase Out Option” (employed during the 2001-2002 contract year and meet eligibility described in Article VIII, section B, #2) you need to give written notice to human resources by the first day of April.

In the unfortunate circumstance that you are dismissed, non-renewed, or given a Reduction In Force (RIF) notice, you need to make sure that you contact a NEA-Salina Education Rights Advocate for advice on the best way to handle your situation. IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE! USD 305 must notify you by the third Friday of May if they are going to non-renew your contract.

Find a copy of your NEA-Salina Negotiated Agreement here.
