Biography: Franklin W. Dixon is the pen name for many different authors. Leslie McFarlane was first to use the pen name Dixon. He was responsible for the first Sixteen hardy boy books and five others throughout the series. McFarlane wrote these for the Stratemeyer Syndicate which is now owned by Simon and Schuster. McFarlane was born on October 25, 1902 and lived until September 6, 1977. He died at age 78. McFarlane was the son of a school principal, he was raised in the town of Haileybury, Ontario. He became a freelance writer shortly after high school. In 1936 he and his family moved to Whitby, Ontario. As a young man he worked as a newspaper reporter in Sudbury, Ontario. When he saw a "want ad" posted by the Stratemeyer Syndicate he replied and was accepted. It was through this that he got involved in the hardy boys series. As his son put it "he calls it a nuisance... having to write another one of those nuisent books".

These are two of the authors that use the pen name Franklin W. Dixon.
