Individual vs Society By: Kavdeep dara----Period:4

Universal Theme

A person's identity is determined by how society views them.

"Tularecito"

" 'We really can't do it, Mr. Gomez,' the judge said finally. 'You say he is a good boy. Just yesterday, he tried to kill a man. You must see that we cannot let him go loose. Sooner or later he will succeed in killing someone' "(10).

Even though Franklin Gomez considers Tularecito as innocent, others didn't. The way the society in the story viewed Tularecito resulted in Tularecito being locked in a mental asylum and looked upon as a murderer. Tularecito's identity changed from being a skilled child to a vicious murderer due to society's perception of Tularecito.

"Of Mice and Men"

" 'I said what stake you got in this guy? You takin' his pay away from him?'

'No 'course I ain't. Why ya think I'm sellin' him out?'

'Well, I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy. I just like to know what your interest is' "(22).

Due to the way "the boss" has seen the society work, he considered Lennie and George to be frauds. The boss asked George what his stake is with Lennie because he never saw two men working together like this. George and Lennie's identities turned from two hard working men to two frauds trying to make money in front of the boss just because that's how the society thought of men like that.

"The Chrysanthemums"

'It must be nice,' she said. 'It must be very nice. I wish I could do such things.'

'It ain't the right kind of a life for a women.'

Her upper lips raised a little, showing her teeth. 'How do you know? How can you tell?' she said.

'I don't know, ma'am,' he protested. 'Of course I don't know. Now here's your kettles, done. You don't have to buy new ones' "(6-7).

The reason why the man didn't know why he thought the way he did about Elisa was because that's how society saw women as. They didn't think that women should be doing such things. The man thought of Elisa as innocent and weak due to the way the society thought in those times. That's why he didn't think Elisa should be doing

Why you should care?

Even today people's identities are determined by the way society views them. From your friends to your favorite movie star, you as part of the society view them in a certain way giving them an identity. For example, if the most known couple break up, you view them in a sense of betrayal giving them an identity of being a bad couple. In conclusion, I have learned that no matter how society views you, always be who who you are. Don't allow others to change your identity.
