The Kent City Eagles Basketball Team consists of Seniors McKenna Carlson, Paige Mortensen and Kaitlynn Geers. Juniors are Shelby Flanagan, Caitlynn Swanson, and Teanna McCuig. Sophomores, Paula Roberts, Mackenzie Mortensen, Lauren Freeland, Zara Weber, and Janelle Krueger. Then freshman Lauren Schincke on the varsity team. Though the girls had a rocky start they accomplished a win against Coopersville 41-36 and then again at the home game against Holton 58-29. The Kent city eagles showed great sportsmanship out on the court. For example, whenever their team mate fell we helped them up and vis-versa.
Varsity Boys Basketball
The Varsity eagles dropped their season opener to Coopersville in the fourth quarter 54-47. They were led by Junior Fraser WIlson with 13 points, and Jace Dailey with 12. In the first game of the CSAA play, and the second game of their season, the Eagles got their first win of the year-beating Holton 52-33. Kent City held the Red Devils to just four points in the second and third quarters combined. The eagles took control of the game by scoring 24 points in the third. Leading scores were Juniors Cody Bowers with 10 points, Hunter Nelson with 9, and Jace Dailey with 8.
J.V. Boys Basketball
The JV boys dropped their season opener to Coopersville in overtime loss 74-71. They were led by freshman Eli Carlson with 28 points, sophomores Jarod Coates with 12 and Brendan Geers with 10. The JV boys got their first win of the season against Holton 69-27. They showed very strong what defense throughout the game. Leading scorers were Freshman Eli Carlson with 19, and Sophomores John Meek with 12 and Brendan Geers with 10. In their third game of the season, they JV boys won 62-36 at Grant. Leading scorers were Freshman Eli Carlson with 14, and Sophomores John Meek with 11, and Jake Alt with 10.
Freshman Boys Basketball
The Freshman boys dropped their first game to Coopersville 45-34. After three quarters the teams were tied at 27, unfortunately the Broncos were too much to handle. Leading scorers were Nick Flegal with 13 points, and Will Wright with 8. Four other Eagles contributed as well. IN the second game of their season they traveled to Newago from the Lions season opener. Kent city jumped out to a quick lead showing great offence and strong defense. Kent City was able to hold on to a 1-point lead, and win the game 39-38. Leading scores were Will Wright with 10 points, and Spencer Hartley with 9, along with four other eagles adding to the total.
This year the bowling teams have had a great start to their season. They have already won both of their matches so far on the season. They continue to bring their personal records up. The first team that the teams beat was Lakeview. Their second match was against Big Rapids and both teams dominated. The teams are 2-0 on the season. Both teams will face Wellspring Prep on Wednesday December 14th at 3:30pm. This will take place at their home alley in Sparta. This is their last home match for December. Their last away match up for December is on the 17th at 12pm. This is at the Orchard View home lanes (Northway Lanes).
The girls team has seven seniors on the team this year; Brittany Johnson, Cassidy Dayton, Kristen Lundquist, Lauren Jones, Lauren Longcore, Larissa Crowley, and Mackenzie Schoonmaker, one junior, Abby Davis, and one freshman, Lauren Johnson. The boys team includes no seniors, two juniors, Joel Ignasiak and Kristian Bouck, two sophomores, Mason Mcvicker and Nick Brummel, and one freshman, Anthony Stevens this year.
Kristen Lundquist says “The bowling team is like a family and we created cheers to keep our energy levels up. Also we want to keep our positivity golden.”
