What is Youth Literacy Mentoring

The Youth Literacy Mentoring (YLM) Program provides a comprehensive program designed to tackle the literacy crisis among youth (K - 5) who cannot read at grade level. We partner with after-school organizations, universities and technology providers to offer a turnkey solution to address the literacy needs of our youth.

Launched in 2016, YLM has mentored more than 500 students across Philadelphia, as part of the Uncommon Individual Foundation's Education program.

  • Chester A. Arthur Elementary School
  • Eliza B. Kirkbride Elementary School
  • Chester Eastside, Inc After-School Program
  • Charles A. Melton Center After-School Program

Who are you?

You are an undergraduate education student with a diverse set of skills. You are resourceful and find it interesting to work with youth. We are looking for a motivated self-starter who enjoys spending time in the classroom helping students learn to read. It's important that you share a genuine passion for reading.

Students in this role gain hands-on experience working with the Youth Literacy Mentoring program, a comprehensive program designed to tackle the literacy crisis among youth (K - 5) who cannot read at grade level. This position allows for students to gain real world experience working alongside UIF staff and partner organizations.

Responsibilities? Here they are:

As a YLM Associate you will represent the Uncommon Individual Foundation within schools across the city, alongside our partners at Sunrise of Philadelphia. We are looking for someone who loves to work with elementary age students.

  • Attend our after-school programs Monday -Thursday
  • Generate reports from iReady
  • Develop content for small group instruction
  • Conduct small group lessons as time allows
  • Provide problem resolution as necessary
  • Flexible schedule

Want some details?

  • Self-motivated undergraduate education students (rising juniors and seniors)
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • Fall/Spring Internship (8/25/18- 5/1/19), 15-25 hours/week, M-F 2:00PM-6:00PM
  • Compensation: Paid bi-weekly at $12/hr
