Gas warfare consists of countries dropping gas on our trenches or countries dropping gas bombs on our trenches. If you are not wearing a gas mask you will die because the gas burn your eyes and you will go blind. You will also suffocate because you are breathing in to much gas and not enough oxygen(Apocalypse).

Helmets are used because while you are fighting in the war you are going to be shot at so a helmet is meant to protect your head. Helmets also protect against shrapnel. Shrapnel will be flying at you from all angles and it is sharp so if you get hit in the head you could possibly die if you get hit in the head(Apocalypse).

Entrenching Tool

You will need an entrenching tool of some sort when you go in to battle. You will need it because in case your trench get muddy you can dig out the mud. If you don't have an entrenching tool the condition in the trench would be even worse(InspirEd).

Heavy Jacket

You will need some sort of heavy jacket because it will get cold in the winter and when you in battle there is going to be shrapnel everywhere so a heavy jacket will protect you from some shrapnel. If you are wearing a lighter jacket the shrapnel will go right through the jacket. It may be hot but in the long run it could save your life multiple times(Apocalypse).

Boots

The reason being that if you do not wear boots it will be very hard to walk around the trench because the trenches are very muddy. Also in battle there will be a lot of sharp object on the ground so you could cut your foot on something sharp(InspirEd).
