Bob Dylan:The Times They Are A-Changin' By Jaelyn Winns

"Come gather around people. Wherever you roam. And admit that the waters. Around you have grown. And accept it that soon. You'll be drenched to the bone. And if your breath to you is worth saving. Then you better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone. For the times they are a-changing".

Everyone gather around and acknowledge that there are flaws in the government right now. There are problems with racism and poverty and people need to start realizing it needs to change. If we don't seek change than it will only get worse.

"Come writers and critics. Who prophesize with your pen. And keep your eyes wide. The chance won't come again. And don't speak too soon. For the wheel's still in spin. And there's no telling who that it's naming. For the loser now will be later to win. Cause the times they are a-changing"

All of the writers and critics get ready because you will want to keep your eyes open to tell the real story about society today. The media and newspapers need to write about what is changing and trying to make a difference in the world for the better.

"Come senators, congressmen. Please heed the call. Don't stand in the doorway. Don't block up the hall. For he that gets hurt. Will be he who has stalled. There's the battle outside raging. It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls. For the times they are a-changing".

Senators and congressman need to listen to change and not block those who want change and freedom. If they block the way of freedom, they will be the ones who get hurt. The times are changing to try and end poverty and discrimination. Good is rising in the world.

"Come mothers and fathers. Throughout the land. And don't criticize. What you can't understand. Your sons and your daughters. Are beyond your command. Your old road is rapidly aging. Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand. Cause the times they are a-changing".

Mothers and fathers don't judge what you don't understand because your sons and daughters are rebelling for a new freedom. Your way of doing things is gone because times are changing, so don't criticize your youth because they want a better society. If you can't see it yet, then don't get in there way of changing the world.

"The line it is drawn. The curse it is cast. The slowest now. Will later be fast. As the present now. Will later be past. The order is rapidly fading. And the first one now will later be last. Cause the times they are a-changing".

Times have changed and those who stood up are now the minority, but they will be the ones in charge and making a difference. People will start to see why there needed to be a change so we could change the course of history into a better society.

Theme: The song was an anthem to all the young and frustrated. It was a song that was for the anti- establishment people known as hippies. The lyrics were based off of the Civil Rights Movement and social injustice.

Social and Cultural: Bob Dylan joined the social movement in the early 60's and created this song to represent the youth going through a cultural rebellion. In the song he sings "Come mothers and fathers. Throughout the land. And don't criticize. What you can't understand. These lyrics call out mothers and fathers to acknowledge the generation gap and how the youth should be allowed to their own freedom. Dylan says that times are changing because society is changing and you should express your own beliefs. He wrote about the big issues during that time and it has shaped the way music is produced today.
