April 25, 2018, was known as #SaveStudentNewsrooms day, a movement that we immediately noticed as Spotlight had been working with and for student newsrooms for several months prior. All across the country, and the world, student newsrooms are losing revenue as they struggle with the transition from traditional print newsrooms to digital newsrooms. We started Spotlight to contribute to finding a solution for the most difficult problems facing student newsrooms - revenue and distribution.
The current method of distributing news content on social media and search is not built to benefit the publishers or the readers, but rather the advertisers. While advertising is a necessary evil, there are ways for student journalists to be compensated for the amazing work that they do each and every day. Spotlight will help them do just that.
