QUIDDITCH

The Mason Quidditch Club competed in the Acromantula Cup III this past weekend hosted by the University of Richmond. It would be the first taste of tournament competition for many of the new members. The club had a great first tournament as they were able to end the weekend with a victory via snitch catch against in-state rival VCU. Notable players for the weekend: Anthony Vega, Tommy Jacob, George Gomez, and Ian Meyer.

WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY

The Mason Women's Ice Hockey Club traveled to Slippery Rock University this weekend to face-off in the first official game in club history. Many of the Mason players were nervous heading into their first game and it did not help that they would be facing a Slippery Rock team that was a finalist in the 2018-19 DVCHC Championship. The coaching staff did a fantastic job managing a small rotation and put the team in the best position to win throughout the weekend. Norah McGregor put Mason on the board in the first period securing the 1st official goal in team history. Caroline Morrow and Mimi Grove would close out the scoring in game 1 behind an 89.5% save percentage from goalie Lara Garrity to secure the win.

The women returned to the ice early Sunday morning to face a Slippery Rock team that was well rested and looking for revenge. There would be no revenge this time as Mason jumped out early on a goal by Mimi Grove. Grove put the team at ease with her second goal of period and would add her 3rd goal of the game (hat-trick) in the 2nd. Mason carried a 3-1 lead into the 3rd and final period before Slippery Rock closed the score to 3-2. Strong defense play and a 92.3% save percentage sent Mason back to Fairfax with a 2-0 record on the season. Mason looks to extend their winning streak as they head to Indiana University of PA this weekend.

TRAP & SKEET

The Mason Trap & Skeet Club traveled to Sudlersville, MD this past weekend to compete in the Battle of the Bay. The club walked away with a 3rd place finish in team competition behind excellent shooting throughout their roster. It was a great weekend of shooting and competition as many new members were able to experience shooting in the rain.

FOOTBALL

Mason traveled to Coppin State University this past weekend in a much anticipated rivalry with playoff implications on the line. The club found themselves behind early in the game and would not get any help from the officials. Trailing 12-0, Basil Hasan would connect with his favorite target, (WR) Willie Marrow, to bring Mason within 6 pts. Unfortunately, Mason found themselves with their back to the wall and unable to solve the Coppin State defense. Coppin State would close out the game 26-6 and will hold the upper-hand in playoff consideration. The club returns home on Saturday, November 2 against Pitt at 1PM on RAC Field.

MEN'S ULTIMATE

The Men's Ultimate Club traveled to UMBC this past weekend to compete in a round-robin event in Baltimore. The Mason A team was able to walk away with a 1st place finish and rookie Tyrell Jones had the most defensive turns for the club. Strong defense and limited turnovers were the key to victory for the club. Mason will return home on November 9-10 as they will host their annual 20-team tournament on West campus.

WOMEN'S ULTIMATE

Mason Women's Ultimate traveled to UMD looking to extend their win streak and excellent play. The club finished the weekend 2-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of an alumni from University of Maryland. It was an all-around team effort, but the rookies are shining brighter with each game under their belts. Mason will host their annual 16-team tournament on November 2-3.

POWER LIFTING

Jacob Westney of the Mason Power Lifting Club competed in the USA Powerlifting Virginia Winter Wrecker this past weekend at The Shop in Manassas, VA. Jacob had an outstanding performance, as he placed first in the Men's Raw Collegiate and Raw Junior 120+ Kg divisions. Jacob was able to finish the afternoon completing 9 of 9 attempts with a total of 230kg Squat, 142.5kg Bench, and 257.5kg Deadlift.

FIELD HOCKEY

Mason Club Field Hockey hosted their first round-robin event of the year with Georgetown and William & Mary on Saturday afternoon. After falling to Georgetown 2-0 in the opening game, Mason was able to rebound with a 2-0 win over William and Mary. The club welcomed a few new faces on to the club, as a few men from the Club Baseball team joined in on the action. The addition of the new members helped sustain the energy throughout the afternoon and allowed the club to substitute more frequently. Blair McLendon made several great plays and helped contribute to the 5 corners throughout the game. Paige Welch and Kailea Baggett moved the ball efficiently, while goalie David Hamlette saw limited action due to the great play from defenders Lily Plizga and Jenna Andrews.

The club returns to action on Sunday, November 3 as part of their "Field Hockey Fights Hunger" tournament on RAC Field. Spectators are asked to bring canned food items that will be donated in support of the Patriot Pantry and the Capital Area Food Bank. Please follow the club on Instagram @gmu_fieldhockey, Twitter @GMUFieldHockey, and on Facebook.

RUNNING

The Mason Running Club traveled to Charlottesville, VA this past weekend to compete in the Cavalier Invitational hosted at Panorama Farms. Aslan Azar was the outstanding performer for Mason, finishing 4th in the Men's 8k, out of 100+ runners. The club also saw several members set personal and seasonal records.

MEN'S RUGBY

The Men's Rugby club traveled to Christopher Newport on Saturday to face-off with a tough CNU team. Traveling with a skeleton crew of 16 players, Mason played tough with a very strong CNU team. Fly-half Brian Fredrikson moved the ball down the back line with speed and precision, while inside and outside centers Chris Roth and Luke Crytzer broke the CNU defensive line on multiple occasions. Wong Gonzalez and Eric Paz combined for a try to put Mason on the board. Despite having possession of the ball for the majority of the game and making twice as many tackles, CNU was able to outlast Mason with incredibly accurate box kicks.
