Making an ocean of difference Hear it straight from our volunteers about how they are making a difference for reefs & oceans in 2017

"Volunteering for Reef Check has given a whole new aspect to my diving and an opportunity to spend time and connect with like-minded people. It's great being able to do what you enjoy, gain new skills and be part of a long-term monitoring project. Participating in beach and dive clean ups has made more mindful of my usage and consumption of plastics and rubbish in general, and now every beach trip is a mini clean up!"

- Hannaleena Väisänen, Sunshine Coast

"Being part of the RCA community allows us to help protect the wonderful GBR and opens doors for global Reef Check. I feel honoured to be part of such a great cause to help the public gain awareness in how to assist with saving the reef."

-Zara Marks-Collins, SURVEYOR and gbr Assistant project officer

"After years of volunteering in the field I realised I could use my geospatial and big data skills to build a system which better matches the needs of volunteers, coordinators and data users. I'm working on a project to give back to the Reef Check network by creating an accessible data entry and reporting process that empowers volunteers to protect reefs into the future."

-Josh Passenger, surveyor, team leader and database guru

The Ambassadors program was my gateway to increasing my marine science knowledge & becoming a fully-fledged ‘ocean nerd/warrior’ over the past two years. I had previously undertaken a Science degree and begun diving, but it was only after participating in the program that I felt really empowered to bring current marine conservation issues to the public. Since becoming an Ambassador, I have attended many Reef Check events, festivals and development sessions, learning more and more each time about the best way to effectively communicate science. Being an Ambassador has also been amazing in the sense of being part of a group of like-minded individuals. It has given me the motivation and drive to become more involved in protecting our reefs and oceans.

Tania Kenyon, Surveyor and Reef Ambassador

"VOLUNTEERING WITH REEF CHECK HAS GIVEN ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN REEF HEALTH MONITORING AND ENGAGE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN CORAL REEF STEWARDSHIP. IT IS TRULY INSPIRING TO DIVE THE GREAT BARRIER REEF WITH SUCH AN AMAZING TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS!"

- SAMANTHA MARIE JAWORSKI, Surveyor & GBR Assistant project officer

"Engaging the community in science allows the knowledge to be shared, that why Reef Check is such an amazing organisation. Getting non-science people IMMERSED in the underwater world is priceless."

Bec Formanek, surveyor
