Diamond Edge January 2020

Teaching and Learning

January and February mark the ACCESS Testing window for our over 350 English Language Learners. The ACCESS Test is designed to test English Language proficiency in the four domains of language (speaking, reading, writing and listening). Students who receive a 4.8 Composite score are deemed English Language proficient and are no longer required to receive language services. Knowing that it takes between 5-10 years to acquire a new language D76 is dedicated to the support of our English Language Learners by offering a comprehensive EL Resource Program that serves to support English Language acquisition and a Dual Language Program that serves to support EL learners in English as well as Spanish. We are so proud to be fostering and promoting Biliteracy and Multiculturalism in order to prepare our D76 students to be “Life Long Learners, Engaged in Their Community, and Ready for the World.”

District 76 is proud to announce that it has received a financial profile score of 3.9! We received Recognition status, which means that the “district requires little/no review or involvement by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)” in regards to its financial health. ISBE uses a score of 1-4 to measure a school district’s financial health. The score is made up of several important financial metrics such as fund balance to revenue ratio, expenditure to revenue ratio, days cash on hand, percent of short and long-term borrowing ability. ISBE compiles that data to form a final “profile score”. This is the ninth year in a row that D76 has received the profile score of “Recognition”. We are proud of this distinguished recognition and continued focus on fiscal responsibility.

Instructional Technology & Communications

West Oak Campus students are learning and experiencing virtual reality within our Innovation Center using our very own HTC Vive. In addition to our recent West Oak STEAM Night our teachers and students are growing experience with modernized virtual platforms with the primary goal to enhance subject content while experiencing a unique learning modality. Students now can travel the globe in an instant with Google Earth VR, create virtual artististic designs in Tilt Brush, and even incorporate movement and kinesthetic breaks using Beat Saber. We are excited in continuing to explore new innovative ways for teaching and learning while implementing future ready instructional technology.
