Blue and yellow macaws at Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, Cozumel Story and Photography by Robert Neff

On 23 November 2017, the Brilliance of the Seas embarked Tampa for the Western Caribbean. I was a passenger on Royal Caribbean's cruise ship for the next seven days. On Day 5, our port of call was Cozumel. We hired a taxi for three hours to experience Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. We explored the Eco Park's beach area along the road, lighthouse, Mayan ruins and the observation tower at Columbia Lagoon. The rescue macaws at the lighthouse was a highlight.

The observation tower at Columbia Lagoon offered vista views of the the wildlife. Flamingos were flying above the water.

The off road drive provided stops along the way to walk on the beach's powder white sand.

The Celarain Lighthouse looked freshly whitewashed under the Cozumel sun.

At the base of the Celarain Lighthouse, there was a shaded corner where the macaws and their trainer were entertaining the steady stream of tourists.

The blue and yellow macaws were rescue birds.

They were trained, and

were performing for tourists.

But there was an incentive.

Their colors were vivid and could have been an advertisement for a new ultra hi-definiton color television.

The detail in the macaw's feather was stunning.

This was almost beak to lens!

Kids interacted with the macaws.

Unfortunately, there was not enough time to visit the Punta Sur Beach area.

My book, Pelican Beakon, earned a silver medal at 2017 Florida Authors and Publishers Association President's Book Award in the short story fiction category. The Pelican Beakon is a newspaper for pelicans, by pelicans, and their one staff human photographer who dreams of being writer. Read more about the Pelican Beakon on its website.
