Question 1: Medical Plants

Aloe- Gel used to treat burns

Cacao- Chemicals found in the plant are used to treat asthma.

Coconut Palm- Almost all parts on this tree are used for healing

Saw Palmetto- The ripe fruit is used to treat BPH

Cinchona- The bark is used to treat malaria

Question 2: Sketch of a leaf

This leafs adaptation is that the leaf is very wide and long. This allows the leaf to absorb more sunlight in the shady rainforest.

Question 3: Take a picture of an epiphyte in the rainforest

The Tropical Blueberry

The Tropical Blueberry is a vine, allowing it to climb up trees and other plants to gather sunlight in the rainforest.

Question 4: Find 5 food plants that are used for food

The Cacao Plant: The fruit of the Cacao plant is used in the production of chocolate
The Royal Palm: The tip of the stem is used in salads.
The Saguaro Cactus: The fruit of the Saguaro Cactus is used as food for many animals in the desert
The Agave Plant: The nectar of the agave plant is used in syrup
Sycamore Fig: The fruit is eaten often.

Question 5: Find the Kava plant.

The Kava Plant

The Kava Plant's name means "intoxicating pepper"

The Kava Plant causes tension in the body, and makes them less inhibited and more relaxed. It can also reduce stress and sleep disturbances.

The most useful part of the tree is the roots.

Offering the Kava drink to someone is a symbol of good will.

Question 6: Fnd a carnivorous plant

The Venus Fly Trap

The Venus Fly Trap has tiny hairs-like objects that sense when a meal is inside it

Venus Flytraps need to be carnivorous because they usually live in soil that doesn't have enough nutrients, and it is better for them to capture prey.

Question 7: Find 3 different flowers.

The Bougainvillea

This flower is pollinated due to it's bright colored pedals. These bright colors attract pollinators to the flower. The pollinators will later pass on the pollen to the other Bougainvillea flowers.

Like the Bougainvillea, the Cymbidium is colorful to attract pollinators. Although, the Cymbidium has a tunnel-like object that acts like a passage way for the bee to reach the stigma and stamen

Vrisea Imperialis

The Vrisea Imperialis also has bright colors to atract pollinators and a tunnel to guide the bee to the stigma nd stamen

Question 8: How many Mahogany trees are needed to make a dresser?

You can make around 5 or 6 dressers using one Mahogany tree.

Question 9: Find the Curare Plant

The Curare Plant

The Curare plant soothes and relaxes muscles.

Many doctors use a chemical in the Curare plant called turbocurarine, to paralyze their patient's bodies without stopping their heart.

The Curare plant can also be used as dart poison for hunters. Hunters would usually tip their arrows with this poison.

10) List the layers of the Rainforest

The Forest floor (the lowest layer)

The forest floor doesn't have many nutrients because most decomposing waste doesn't have the time to enrich in the soil before being washed away by rain or being eaten by an animal.

The Understory Layer

This layer is made up of the small trees and shrubs. This layer is usually unlit and humid.

The Canopy Layer

This is the most diverse of the 4 layers. Many animals and plants live here. Most scientists usually find that this is the most interesting of all the layers This layer is usually lit up and covering the two lower layers from sunlight

The Emergent Layer (the tallest layer)

This layer is were all the large trees that "break through the canopy" reside.

11) Find a climbing plant in the wetlands section

The Jade Vine

The Jade vine has little tendrils coming out of its stem that allow it to grab on to other plants or objects.

12) There is an area in the rainforest covered by moss

Moss is so small because it does not have vascular bundles. Because of this, it can't transport water and food throughout the plant, so it must remain short.

13) Find the Blonde Tree Fern

Blonde Tree Fern

The Blonde Tree Fern is a seedless plant. We know this because the Blonde Tree fern is part of the order Cyatheales, which is a subdivision of fern.

14) Find an epiphyte in the desert

A way that Tillandsia are different from the other epiphytes we saw earlier is because they are evergreen.

15) Sketch a leaf in the desert

This is a drawing of a leaf in the desert biome. It´s adaption is that it has thorns, causing animals to not try to eat this leaf.

16) Find a flower in the desert

Aloe pictofolia

This flower is different from the flowers we found in the rainforest because they don't look like they would be as easily pollinated by insects or animals as the ones in the rainforest. They also come in a group called a raceme.
