The Plants NEED Your Help!

Welcome Plant Experts!

Introduction

2-LS2-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow.

Plant experts, we need your help! Aliens have just arrived from outer space and need your help to plant a garden. No plants can grow in outer space, so they have no idea how to get started!

Can you help the aliens grow their garden?

The aliens want to know:

  • How does a tiny seed grow into a big and beautiful plant?
  • What do plants need to grow?
  • What happens if a plant does not have what it needs to grow?
  • What is the most important thing a plant must have to grow?

Task

By the end of this Webquest and investigation, you will be able to identify the 3 basic requirements needed for a plant to grow, create a mini-book, and gain group work skills.

You and your group will need to investigate the 4 things plants need to grow in order to help your alien friends plant their garden. Your group will watch videos, play interactive games, and complete activities.

You will be planting 4 beans in separate cups to test what happens to plants when they do not get everything they need to grow. You will be observing your plants each day and writing/drawing what you see.

After the week long investigation, your group will take all that you have learned in order to create a mini-book for your alien friends. The book will include pictures and words describing the 3 things needed to grow a plant and the one that your group found was most important.

Have fun investigating and exploring the world of plants! With your help, the aliens are very excited to get started with their garden too!

Process

Day 1:

1. Print this page out to do during your investigation today.

2. Click on the video and press play. Pause the video when they tell you so you can write and draw it in your plant investigator chart!

Day 2:

1. It is time to conduct your own experiment! First you must collect all of your materials.

You will need:

  • 4 Cups
  • 4 Seeds
  • Soil
  • Sand
  • Water

2. Label your cups with your group number or group name.

3. Place soil in 3 of the cups and bury 1 seed in each cup.

4. Place sand in the 4th cup and bury 1 seed in the sand.

Remember: In order to see what plants cannot live without:

  • One cup WILL NOT have water.
  • One cup WILL NOT have sun.
  • One cup WILL NOT have soil, instead the cup WILL have sand.
  • One cup WILL have water, sun, and soil.

5. Watch this video and read about how a plant grows!

Day 3:

1. Print out this observation chart.

2. Observe your plants. Draw what your plants look like on each day in your chart.

3. Play this game to plant the different seeds! Let each group member have a turn.

Day 4 & Day 5:

1. Make the observation in your log for the correct days.

2. With the members of your group, plan your mini-book for your alien friends.

  • What does a plant need to grow?
  • What did your group find to be the most important thing needed for a plant to grow?

3. Write one plant need on each page of your mini-book.

4. Write the most important plant need on the last page of your mini-book.

5. Illustrate each plant need, use lots of details and color so the aliens understand!
