Scripture

Today's story is about another one of God's covenants, or promises. Today, we hear about the promises God makes to Abraham. Abraham had faith. He trusted in God to keep His promises. God promises three things to him:

  1. Abraham will have a big family.
  2. His family will have lots of land and be a nation.
  3. His family would be famous. A king would be a part of it.

Genesis 17:1-8 CSB When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai. Walk with me and be trustworthy. I will make a covenant between us and I will give you many, many descendants.” Abram fell on his face, and God said to him, “But me, my covenant is with you; you will be the ancestor of many nations. And because I have made you the ancestor of many nations, your name will no longer be Abram but Abraham. I will make you very fertile. I will produce nations from you, and kings will come from you. I will set up my covenant with you and your descendants after you in every generation as an enduring covenant. I will be your God and your descendants’ God after you. I will give you and your descendants the land in which you are immigrants, the whole land of Canaan, as an enduring possession. And I will be their God.”

Talk

Like Abraham, we put our faith and trust in God's promises! Because of Jesus, we have a place in the family of God.

Why is Abraham a good example of someone who trusted in God? Who do you trust? What does it mean to put your trust in God? Think about the rest of the Bible; how did God keep His promise to Abraham? How does it feel to know you have a place in God's family just like Abraham?

TRUST WALK Let’s practice trust and faith by going on a brief trust walk with a couple of family members. One person will close her or his eyes, and the others will guide their family member gently and carefully around the room. After a minute, debrief the experience. What was it like to guide your family member around the room? What was it like to trust your friends to keep you safe? How might this activity connect with our story?

STAR CRAFT God told Abraham his family would number the stars in sky. Make a star to remember how through Jesus' death and resurrection, He made you a part of God's family.

Pray + Bless

Pray: Thank you, God, for Abraham. Thank you, God, for this example trust and faith. Help us trust you, too. Help us have faith in you. Amen.

Make the sign of the cross on the forehead of each person in your family and say, "God's promises are for you."
