2018 ASLA Honorary Member James Garland, Hon. ASLA

Honorary membership is among the highest honors the American Society of Landscape Architects may bestow upon non-landscape architects in recognition of notable service to the profession. Since its inception in 1899, ASLA has inducted only 233 honorary members.

An architect, James Garland founded Fluidity Design Consultants in 2002, after more than twenty years in the practice of architecture, urbanism and water design. As a contributor to projects of landscape architecture, especially those in the public realm, Garland embraces collaboration with landscape architects while working to elevate the artistry and expectation of what water features can be and how people, places and water creatively intermingle.

In recent years, Garland and his team have focused on a comprehensive analysis of the world’s most recognized water features and the cultural and historical forces that helped shape them.

Simultaneously, Fluidity’s Advanced Design Initiative program has focused on the development of new sustainable systems, including living systems and strategies for conserving water and energy without diminishing the elegant design, dramatic vitality or symbolic messaging implicit in water presentation.
