Marco Polo And The Silk Road.

The reopening of the Silk Road helped spark the renaissance because trades started to increase. People also started learning about more cultures. They once again made the roads safer for travelers and traders.


Italian Trade Cities - Florence

In the 1300s trade goods from Asia poured into Europe. Many of those items came through Italian ports. As a result, the merchant families in these cities made money. As the families grew rich and powerful they wanted to everyone to see what their money can buy.

Rediscovering the past

Among the ideas that Italian scholars wanted to revive were the

humanities. Other ancient sources of inspiration for

Renaissance artists and architects were still around. Roman

ruins could still be found throughout Italy. Fine classical statues were still on display.
