MOMENTS OF PRACTICE

A year of opportunity, exploring new, uncertain territories such as film. Practicing photography is just like anything else experienced in life, you get better and more advanced when time is put in. These moments of practice are some of my favorites - filled with people and places, shot on both film and digital cameras.

TIME

Always eager for more time; I am a procrastinator, I am a student, I am a son. The chance to pursue my creativity is handed to me through photography and its versatility. The ability to stop time and occupy a specific moment repeatedly gives my turbulent existence a purposed rest.

Appropriation

Life before quarantine...

A new project to learn and develop, Ms. Marsh challenged us with the "Appropriation Project." Lewis Hines was who I chose, famous for photographing the grueling realities of child labor during the early 20th century. However, today's society is surrounded by children distracted by tablets and teenagers consumed in their phones; a comparison between that and six year olds operating machinery for hours is unjust.

In effort to express the differences, I compared the dreaded chores done by 21st century teens with those forced upon pre-pubescent children. I aim to convey the idea that despite the mental and physical battles endured, teens of this decade are fortunate to experience life full of opportunity. We must appreciate our current situation because burdens, such as laundry, were once a luxury.

During the research process, I discovered common themes Hines kept throughout his child labor series. Most notably, he used the symmetrical machinery to guide the viewer directly to the subject, as well as, always shooting at eye level - both things I tried to incorporate into my work.
