MEET OUR MENTOR:

K. J. Matthews is a veteran entertainment journalist who has covered Hollywood for more than a decade.

She started her career working as a journalist for the CBS-TV affiliate in San Diego. During her two year stint at the Emmy award-winning station in San Diego, she wrote, produced and covered breaking and general news stories.

After the CBS-TV affiliate, she spent five years reporting for the ABC-TV affiliate in Huntsville, Alabama and the FOX-TV affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky. Some of the landmark stories she covered included: the Vice-Presidential debate, the Kentucky Derby, the aftermath of 9/11, and the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy.

After several years, the Los Angeles native returned to LA where she worked as an entertainment journalist for CNN for a decade. At CNN, she covered the film, TV, music and media industries. Her work regularly appeared on AC360, The Situation Room, New Day, CNN Newsroom, Outfront with Erin Burnett, CNN Tonight with Don Lemon, and Morning Express with Robin Meade among others. Her work was not only a staple on CNN, but also on other Turner Networks including, CNN International and HLNtv. During her time, she created and hosted the TV and film enterprise segment, The Red Carpet Report, for CNN Digital. And she was also part of team that won a Peabody Award and contributed to the Emmy-award winning special, CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.

Her career as an entertainment journalist eventually led her to work for the award-winning syndicated show, Extra before becoming an on-air entertainment contributor for BBC World Service Radio, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC World TV, Germany’s DW News English TV Network and ABC Australia’s Breakfast News TV Show.

K. J. holds a bachelor’s degree from UCLA, and a master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from New York University.
