Franklinton High School A call for support

“ALL STUDENTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF DIFFERENCES, CAN LEARN AT HIGH LEVELS AND GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL” - Marty Griffith Principal & Founder of Franklinton High School

Franklinton High School is a public community high school located in one of Columbus, Ohio's most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. It is a school of choice for students in the area and a refuge from large city high schools that are failing. FHS is different from other local high schools in that we understand that our students come to us because they were not thriving in current schools. FHS students come having faced many traumas in their lives and that has adversely affected their education. We embrace this fact and work with social service agencies, social workers, arts teachers and coaches to offer opportunities to our students to work through these traumas. Substantial research has confirmed that our students will thrive in their futures if they have strong relationships with friends, teachers, school personnel, mentors, academic advisors and with those from the community who will be working with FHS students. Positive relationships are the glue that keeps students in school, showing up every day to focus on their learning, earning their high school diploma, and heading toward a successful career and life.

The CIDDI lab will house our Robotics and CTE classes helping to bridge the gap in STEM education facing low income students.

Educational attainment is one lever that can increase opportunity for economically disadvantaged families—especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Unfortunately, students from lower-income backgrounds often perform poorly and fail high school STEM courses

Why Franklinton?

Franklinton has a higher than average rate of adults not in the labor force, indicating a group of individuals who are disconnected from the economy. Steps should be taken to create meaningful opportunities for this group, but focus should also be put on connecting youth with living wage employment during high school.
