PG Basketball Dominates Fork Union Christmas Tournament

Friday, December 9-10 -- Tournament Recap

The Fork Union PG basketball team hosted the annual Fork Union Christmas Tournament this past weekend at the Thomas Gymnasium.

The four-team tournament kicked off Friday with Hargrave Military and Spire Institute in the tournament opener. After Hargrave Military advanced with a 101-94 victory, Fork Union hosted Mount Zion Christian Academy.

The Blue Devils ran past Mount Zion, 86-70, thanks to Zachary McIntire who led the squad with 19 points. Lamont McManus and Blake Burdack crashed the boards with a team-high nine rebounds apiece.

Following the consolation game between Spire Institute and Mount Zion, where Mount Zion won on a last-second shot, 85-84, Fork Union faced rival Hargrave in the Championship game.

The Blue Devils snapped a 44-game Hargrave win streak with a 73-70 victory thanks to O'Neal's desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

Hargrave (14-1) had the ball with 34 seconds remaining with the game tied at 70, but the Tigers never got a good look at the basket, having a go-ahead layup swatted away before the ball ended up in O’Neal’s hands with precious few ticks left in the contest.

The Fork Union (12-1) point guard dribbled just beyond half court before taking a glance up at the clock and throwing up a prayer from 30 feet that rattled around the rim before dropping through the net. Each of the several hundred of Fork Union cadets in attendance immediately flooded the court, mobbing the hero of the evening.

“It is always a privilege to continue the great FUMA tradition that is our Christmas Tournament. It is especially satisfying to host a group of teams who act as men of character and class. We are thankful for the support we received from faculty, alumni, and families throughout the weekend. The cadet corps in attendance made the atmosphere in Thomas Gymnasium second to none. Adding to the excitement of the tournament, both our consolation and championship games on Saturday were decided by the final shot. The tournament championship was a much needed victory for our school after the unexpected passing of our Commandant, Duane Fender, last week. We played all four games of the tournament in his honor.” -- Coach Donohue

Fork Union will be back in action following a two-week holiday break when the team travels to Lynchburg College for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Monday, Jan. 9.

Prep Basketball Named Caisson Classic Champions at Fishburne Military

Friday, December 9-10 -- Tournament Recap

The Fork Union Prep basketball team dominated the Caisson Classic to be named Tournament Champions last weekend at Fishburne Military School.

The Blue Devils downed Randolph-Macon Academy, 66-38, before defeated host Fishburne Military School, 81-70.

The Blue Devils also landed Antonio Pua'auli-Pelham, Dontae Thornton and McCall Warner on the All-Tournament Team.

"The team fought hard throughout the weekend and came away with a great championship. We grew as a team and we will try to use this momentum going into league play." -- Coach Pelham

That being said, we still have a lot of work to do and I am looking forward to seeing how they progress over the next month.” -- Coach Campbell

Next up for Fork Union swimming is the PITT Christmas Invitational to be held at the University of Pittsburgh on 15-18 December.
