Welcome to your SPAN 122 (Hybrid, Hybrid Remote or Distance Ed) Course This is a quick guide.

Welcome to SPAN 122.

This guide provides information, videos and links to university resources for Spanish 122 students.

It also provides information, guidance and links about the required technology enhanced textbook, Mindtap for Juntos, Student Edition.

Spanish 122 students are required to purchase access to the Juntos Digital Platform, Mindtap.

Additionally, this quick guide outlines information about the course's Blackboard site. If there is a task or interaction that counts as part of your grade, it is accessed, completed and submitted from within a Blackboard "folder" in the course's content area that is labeled Tarea_Lecciones. This should be easy to remember because "tarea" means homework and "lecciones" means lessons. In order to succeed, you need to access, complete and submit all of your assignments, including those that are interactive, via the Tarea_Lecciones content area.

From above intro...

  1. You already know that you will need to purchase Mindtap for Juntos and that MindTap is a digital platform.
  2. You already know that all of your assignments in this class are accessed, completed and submitted via the content area that is labeled Tarea_Lecciones in your course's Blackboard site.
  3. You already know that this (where you are now) webpage (Adobe Spark Page) will provide resources, links and explanations to help you with your SPAN 122 course.
University of Louisville offers Spanish courses in all sessions and semesters in Hybrid, Hybrid Remote & Distance Ed formats.

Our Summer 2021 classes are being offered in one format: Distance Ed.

Our Fall 2021, Winter 2021 and Spring 2021 classes are being offered in three formats: Distance Ed. & Hybrid & Hybrid w/Remote.

Remote means that a class will meet online (in real time) on day(s) and at time(s) listed in the schedule of classes. If you are a student in a Hybrid section with remote days, you will have to participate in interactive video chat sessions with your professor and classmates at the time and on the days that class is scheduled remotely. It’s a safe way to have conversations in Spanish. There are also some days when you will interact synchronously during the remote class hour via a text-based discussion forum or other interactions. However, you should prepare to spend the remote hour actively engaged online with the course whether meeting via Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Chatroom or via an different real time interaction. That means that you should plan your calendar accordingly, blocking out time to be fully engaged with and focused on your Spanish course during your remote class meeting time.

Distance Ed. sections will meet online (in real time) on days listed in the course syllabus. If you are a student in a distance ed section, you will have to participate in interactive video chat sessions with your professor and classmates on the dates listed in the course syllabus. Your profe will have shared a Sign Up through which you select the time slot that best fits your schedule.

The difference between Hybrid, Hybrid Remote and the Distance Ed.sections is that your Online Video Chat Sessions occur during class time and on class days listed in the schedule of classes for the Hybrid & Hybrid Remote sections, while the Chat Sessions occur at various times (time slot options) on dates listed in the syllabus' assignment calendar for Distance Ed sections. Also, text based discussion forums require real time participation for Hybrid & Hybrid Remote sections, while text based discussion forums are asynchronous for Distance Ed. sections with posts due by given deadlines. Hybrid courses may also include remote attendance via Blackboard Collaborate if the course's professor has designated some days as HyFlex option.

Hybrid & Hybrid Remote sections = More synchronous activities.

Distance Ed. sections = More asynchronous activities.

From the above...

  1. You have a better understanding of the University's schedule of classes.
  2. You have a better understanding of how to plan your Spanish classes and sequence, since they are offered in all semesters and sessions.
  3. You better understand terminology like: Hybrid, Remote, Distance Ed., Synchronous and Asynchronous.
The University of Louisville provides a lot of support and resources for online learners.
As with any University class, it is important to get your textbooks early to be sure that you are purchasing the correct textbook. For SPAN 121 and for SPAN 122, you will be using an online dynamic digital platform named MindTap for the textbook Juntos. A hard copy of the textbook is not required and an electronic textbook is included with the purchase of MindTap access. Purchasing an eBook will NOT be sufficient so be sure to purchase MindTap for Juntos.

SPAN 122 requires MindTap for Juntos, Student Edition, which is much more than a textbook. Mindtap is a personalized program of digital products and services that engages students with interactivity while also offering students and instructors choice in content, platform, devices, and learning tools. Cengage Learning is a provider of learning and research solutions for the academic, professional, and library markets.

This is an image of the Juntos, Student Edition book cover. Mindtap: Juntos Student Edition is required for SPAN 121 and SPAN 122.

The above video explains the different textbook needs for the different Spanish courses (SPAN 121, SPAN 122, SPAN 123, SPAN 201 & SPAN 202 [for some 200-level sections]).

SPAN 122 students need to purchase access to MindTap for Juntos, Student Edition. Most SPAN 122 students have already purchased access to MindTap for Juntos, Student Edition and will merely need to attach their access to this semester's course via the link in the Syllabus content area in Blackboard. This is because MindTap for Juntos has been required for SPAN 121 since Summer 2019.

If you did not purchase MindTap for Juntos, Student Edition for a period of time that covers your semesters of enrollment in SPAN 121 and SPAN 122, you will need to purchase access for SPAN 122. Only you know if your access has expired or not. If you took SPAN 121 prior to Summer 2019 or if your access has expired, your SPAN 122 needs will be met by purchasing "Mindtap for Juntos, Student Edition's Digital Platform for 6 months". Of course, you may wish to consider Unlimited if you intend to take SPAN 123.

From the above...

  1. You know that you do not need a hard copy of the course's textbook.
  2. You know that it is a good idea to have purchased MindTap access for a period of time that extended through the number of months that you intend to need to complete both SPAN 121 and SPAN 122.
  3. You know that SPAN 122 uses the same Mindtap for Juntos learning platform as was used for SPAN 121.
  4. You know that MindTap for Conectados is used for SPAN 123 and that an option called MindTap Unlimited may be the most economical option if purchased for a period of time that extends through the time that you intend to take to complete SPAN 122 and SPAN 123.
It is important to identify the learning path.

Blackboard is a Learning Management system.

The Blackboard course site is an application for online teaching, learning, community building, and knowledge sharing. Your Spanish course is organized by a Learning Path. A Learning Path is a selection of Lecciones (lessons) that are tied together for learners to progress through, mastering a particular communicative goal or task. The Learning Path is incredibly simple if you properly navigate the Blackboard Learning Management system.

Above is a screenshot of the course menu example. Your learning path is found in the TAREA_Lecciones content area of your course's Blackboard site.
Online learning involves independent learning. Independent learners excel when they establish a good learning approach, reliable study habits and a daily routine.

The daily routine?

First step...

Announcements tool area in main menu of Blackboard (read daily). Notice that all announcements remain visible throughout the semester so that you can look back at past announcements if needed.

Second step...

TAREA_Lecciones content area in Blackboard. All assignments are organized in folders in this content area. Some assignment links will direct you to the MindTap Digital Platform, others will link to Blackboard-based assessments, assignments, discussion boards, voicethreads as well as internet based tools & apps. If it is part of your course grade, it is found in the Tarea-Lecciones content area. Click on a folder or link in the Tarea_Lecciones content area to launch, complete and submit your assignments, quizzes and other tasks.

Third step...

My Grades area in Blackboard provides details about your current grade(s) in the course and you can quickly see how you are progressing through the course. Be sure to check this area upon completing your daily assignments.

From the above...

You understand that your daily routine should be to:

  1. Read posted Announcements,
  2. Access assignments in Tarea_Lecciones content area,
  3. Open the assigned "Lección" folder(s),
  4. Complete the activities housed within the folder, and
  5. Check your progress in My Grades.
You can organize your personal calendar and agenda by following the details outlined in the assignment calendar.

The assignment calendar outlines the "number" of Lección folders that you must complete for a given "due date". It also provides the folder name/label that is assigned. The assignment calendar is posted in 1) the course syllabus, 2) the Syllabus content area of Blackboard and 3) the weekly announcements.

Above is a screenshot of an assignment calendar. This is an example. The assignment calendar is organized by 5 columns. The due date and day of the week are provided in the first two columns. The assigned "Lecciones" that correspond with that due date are outlined in the third column. Your learning "goals" are provided as "can do" statements in the fourth column. The eBook chapter is provided in the final column. In this example, a student needs to open, complete and submit activities in 4 different "Lección" folders for Monday, May 11.

Identify which assignment folders are due and then follow the daily routine.

Above is a screenshot of a "Lección" folder example as found in the "TAREA_Lecciones" content area.

From the above...

  1. You know that the assignment calendar is easily accessed via several different pathways.
  2. You know that the assignment calendar is provided in a detailed and completed form at the start of the semester.
  3. You understand the many details and bits of information provided in the assignment calendar.
  4. You understand how the assignment calendar relates to the learning path.
Language is all about communication.

Communication is built in as an active component of your Spanish 122 course. In Spanish 122, you will interact with classmates via Discussion Boards. These two or more-part written interactions provide the opportunity to use new vocabulary and language patterns for authentic and meaningful interaction. Plus, you can interact asynchronously, which accommodates your classmates' and your varied schedules. In a similar manner, you will engage in spoken exchanges with your professor via the Voice Thread tool. This video chat board allows you to record video comments in response to your professor's video message. Again, you can interact asynchronously, which accommodates your professor's and your varied schedules.

Finally, you will participate in professor-facilitated chat sessions via Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Chat Room. These are synchronous video-chat sessions. The chat sessions, Charlas, last one hour. If you are a Distance Ed. student, your professor has set up a sign-up with dates and times for the chat sessions. This way you can 1) plan ahead and 2) sign-up for the time slot that is most convenient.

Interactive lessons are mapped sequentially along the Learning Path.

Where do you find all of those communication tools?

They are all part of the Learning Path. Resources, instructions and assignments are housed in the TAREA_Lecciones content area. Click on all of the provided links.

Examples of clicks:

-Click on the Folder title/name. For example, click on Lección 1. Discussion Board, Voice Thread, Charla and Prueba (Quiz) are other folder types. To open, complete and submit the associated activities, click on the folder's name.

-Click on the eBook chapter link.

-Click on the activity set for the Lección. This directs you to MindTap.

-Click on the Prueba title to launch.

-Click on the Voice Thread title to launch.

-Click on the Discussion Board title to launch.

-Click on the Laboratorio title to launch.

Above is a screenshot of a Discussion Board "Lección" folder example. As is the case with all assignments, the Discussion Board lesson is accessed, completed and submitted via the TAREA_Lecciones content area.

-Click on the Charla title to access the Collaborate Ultra tool.

Those are examples. The main point is that you need to "click" to work through the assignments that are ALL accessed and completed via the TAREA_Lecciones content area.

From the above...

  1. You know best practices for accessing and completing what are known as tests in Blackboard. It is a template that may be used for assignments as well as quizzes (tests, exams) in your Spanish class.
  2. You know best practices for using the Blackboard Discussion Board tool.
  3. You know best practices for using the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Chatroom.
  4. You know best practices for using the Blackboard VoiceThread tool.
Now, you should be ready to GO! Settle your daily routine. Follow the Learning Path. Enjoy your language acquisition adventure!
