CRANBROOK V HASTINGS SATURDAY 29TH FEBRUARY 2020, KICK OFF 2.30PM, SANDS PITCH

CHAIRMAN'S NOTES 29TH FEBRUARY 2020

Today’s programme is sponsored by Jubilee Hire who, apart from being one of the club’s main sponsors, provide the club with marquees, portable loos, tables and chairs when needed for our club lunches. We thank Bryan and Sally for their continued support of the club.

In this programme I must give credit to Mark Scott and his team for the fact that we have not yet cancelled a match this season; last week the Sands pitch was able to host a game both on the Saturday and the Sunday. The clubs thanks to all those that work on the ground is hereby recorded

Our visitors are Hastings and Bexhill rugby club who are currently in 4th position in Kent 1 whilst we remain in 3rd place. Last week’s game against New Ash Green was postponed because of their waterlogged pitch and this game is being replayed on March 7th. We lost to Hastings and Bexhill at their ground and therefore today’s fixture has that extra spice. The position is that we need to win all our games for the remainder of the season if we are to challenge for promotion.

The referee today is John Price. We wish him well and I know that we will accord John the usual respect that he would expect from a great club like ours.

Last Saturday the Nomads beat Eastbourne 2nds in a friendly 92-0; today they are away at Medway 4ths and this is another crunch game. The Nomads are currently 2nd in the league and the time is soon coming when they will have to decide if they wish to move up a league next season so that they can encounter stronger opposition.

Our Ladies team played a top of the table clash against Tonbridge Juddians last Sunday and lost 5 – 10; this was a very close match which could have gone the other way and the Ladies will no doubt reflect that a win would have been possible but that on occasion the Gods were against them. Their match tomorrow is away at St Francis Ladies and the following week they host the same team at our ground.

The weekend of the 14th and 15th of March will be a busy one. On the Saturday the 1sts are at Hendon in the London final of the National Junior Vase. It is to be hoped that as many as possible will make the journey to Hendon; the club are laying on a coach at a cost of £10 per supporter and you are welcome to join the coach party. Please contact Peter Jovanovic should you wish to do so. The club has never been in the London final before and it is a great achievement for the club.

On the Sunday the club is hosting Kent under 20s at 2pm and our Ladies team are hosting Jersey Ladies. This should be a very enjoyable day at the club with some excellent rugby on view.

The under 16s are playing their Kent cup semi-final against Canterbury on 15 March; this is being played at home but as, yet we are unsure as to which pitch will be used. Please check the website for the time of kick-off which currently seems to be 10 .00am. We wish them well.

After today’s game the 1sts are not at home until 28 March when there is a club lunch for the match against Cliffe Crusaders. It would be wonderful to have a great number at the lunch when we can celebrate in style the successes of the club this season. The Nomads are away on 28 March, but their last league game is the following Saturday at home against Tonbridge Juddians. Subject to the weather the Ladies will also have played their final match by then and is to be hoped that as many as possible of that team will also be present at the lunch.

On 29th March we are hosting the Kent U9s Mini tournament and again can I ask for volunteers to help on the day as it is a massive undertaking. I know that Steen and David will welcome offers of assistance.

Whatever happens for the rest of the season it has been a great season and one of which we all as One Club can be justly proud.

Hasparren AC will arrive on our shores from South West France next Thursday evening through to Sunday and partake in what is a lively tour for them. For many of the children it their first taste of travel outside of France. This is a relationship that has existed from the early noughties and occurs once every two years. In return a Cranbrook team will then tour Hasparren every other year and get treated to a large tournament facing teams from a hotbed of rugby in the Basque Country. The experience for both clubs is a magical one and is often talked about for many years to come. Cranbrook are hosting a small tournament for our guests and some local clubs next Saturday so please feel free to come and watch some lively rugby at the club!
