Headteacher School Update 7th September 2020

As we begin week 5 of the new term I am pleased to report that our new procedures are working well. The systems are bedding in and we are able to keep the focus on our learning and teaching. As we move forward in this new normal it is important that we work around any barriers, changes and or delays to ensure all young people attain and achieve well.

If there is more specific information or clarification required please do not hesitate to contact the relevant year head for your child.

Please stay safe and take care.

Kind regards: Mr Black (Headteacher)

Health and Safety

Just a short reminder of some of the processes to support our return to school.

  • Pupils are being asked to come into the school in year groups to support the flow and enable access to hand sanitisers. They are currently going directly to their period 1 class due to the time restrictions in doing this.
  • We are asking for all pupils to remain on campus over the lunch break for the well-being of everyone within our school campus. For any pupil entitled to a free school meal, a grab bag is available.
  • No parents or carers should be accessing our main car park at the start and end of the day to ensure staff can safely access and leave their place of work and to prevent our young people being endangered in moving traffic. We understand the limited space for pick up and drop off, but we would ask all parents and carers to plan for this.
  • Pupils must only use the pathways in and out of the campus as directed by staff at the end of the day.
  • Pupils and staff are required to wear face coverings in corridors, social areas and toilets.

The wellbeing of all young people and staff is our central focus as we return to school. There are important actions that everyone can take to support this, anyone who,

  • has the symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) - a new persistent cough, fever, loss of sense of smell and / or taste - should STAY AT HOME and arrange for coronavirus testing;
  • is living with someone who has coronavirus symptoms should stay at home and follow the guidance;
  • has returned (or come) to Scotland from a country which is not exempt from the UK quarantine rules, should stay at home following the guidance.

Physical Education

We are expecting new guidance to be issued by the 14th September. Any changes will be communicated directly to pupils and all parents and carers will be updated.

School Calendar

This week all key dates for parents and carers will be sent by text. The key dates includes school activities, holiday dates and events. Where a planned event cannot go ahead due to the restrictions we will strive to ensure we adapt to meet the purpose of the planned event.

All SQA courses have started well and we still await to hear what final changes will be made to the arrangements for this session. We will inform all senior phase parents and carers as soon as we have the final details for all examination arrangements.

Face Coverings

Pupils were issued with school snoods last week to support us in meeting the new guidance for schools. In general pupils are following this well, but I would ask for your support in reminding your son/daughter to follow this guidance for the well-being of everyone in our learning community. Face coverings must be worn in corridors, school toilets, social areas and on school transport.

Parent Council Online Q&A Session

Lornshill Academy PC @LornshillPC

On Thursday 27th August 2020 we held our first parent council meeting of the year. Due to the restrictions this meeting took place online. It was very well attended and it was a great opportunity to discuss school issues and update parents and carers directly.
