CSCSHC Community Newsletter NOVEMBER 16, 2018

Welcome to the CSCSHC Community Newsletter. This bimonthly publication is intended to keep you up-to-date with all that is happening in and around the school district. We want to share all the great things our staff and students are doing in our classrooms and community. We look forward to sharing our stories of student success, achievement, participation in arts and athletics, and a commitment to philanthropy. We are "New Pal Proud" of our students for achieving their personal best in pursuit of excellence!

Message from the Superintendent

State grades from the Department of Education were released earlier this week. While we are incredibly proud to once again be an A-rated district with four A-rated schools, we are never satisfied. Our administrators are hard at work preparing for ILEARN and other changes to the state and federal accountability criteria.

There are a number of events happening in our district this weekend. I hope you can take some time to get out and support our students! The Dragon football team hosts Michigan City in the 5A semi-state game tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. We have information about this weekend's student performance of Fiddler on the Roof in this newsletter. Our girls basketball team is in action tomorrow at Lawrence Central and the NPHS wrestling team starts their 2018-19 season next week. Six members of the NPHS band are participating this weekend in the IBA All-District Honor Band. Good luck everyone and Go Dragons!

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our Southern Hancock students, staff, and families a happy, safe, and restful Thanksgiving Break next week. I hope everybody has the opportunity to spend time with family and loved ones. Have a great holiday and we'll see you back in school on November 26th.

- Dr. Lisa Lantrip

Fiddler on the Roof at NPHS

Please join us at NPHS this weekend for our student performance of Fiddler of the Roof. There are shows Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Please join us in celebrating the arts with our NPHS cast of Fiddler on the Roof.

Traffic Note for Saturday at NPHS

For all traffic coming to Saturday's semi-state football game, please use the SOUTH entrance to NPHS off of Gem Road. For all traffic coming to Fiddler on the Roof, please use the NORTH entrance off of US 52. We ask that all football patrons refrain from parking in the north lot in order to accommodate those attending the musical.

Caring Place Reach Fundraiser

Ms. Temple's English classes at NPHS have been working together on a wonderful project to benefit Caring Place Reach, which is a not-for-profit organization that works with at-risk children, teens, and their families in the Indianapolis area. Each class held a different fundraising opportunity for CPR. Last week, one class held a petting zoo and hayride fundraiser at SCE called "Back at the Barnyard."

NPHS students volunteering at SCE's Back at the Barnyard event.

On top of that, these students will be volunteering two of Caring Place Reach's events called The Thanksgiving Giveaway and The Christmas Store. At the Thanksgiving Giveaway, volunteers walk people around collecting free groceries that they can then take home to prepare a full Thanksgiving meal for their families. At the Christmas Store, volunteers walk children through stores to help them pick out toys and gifts for those in their families and even themselves.

So far, Ms. Temple's students have raised over $1,000 for Caring Place Reach! Great job everyone!

Stockings for Soldiers

NPHS Students from Ms. Boehm's Family, Career, Community Leaders Association participating in the Stocking for Soldiers event at Franklin Central High School.

Ms. Boehm's NPHS FCCLA group took part in a wonderful service project at their most recent district meeting.

They worked with other area schools to cut and sew 749 stockings that will be filled with goodies and sent to Indiana soldiers that are stationed overseas during the holidays.

We are #newpalproud of this incredible service project benefitting Hoosiers who can't be home this holiday season.

Bentley's Buddies at NPI

Bentley's Buddies is an organization that provides animals, along with their owner/volunteers, to children in learning environments. Research indicates that reading skills, comprehension, confidence, and the love of reading are immensely improved in situations where children are relaxed.

Our NPI Speech Pathologist Mrs. Dobbins has worked with Bentley's Buddies to help bring this program to NPI. Her therapy dog, Muffin, is pictured below.

Bentley's Buddies will also be soon sending a dog to help our children who may need a boost with reading or comprehension.

Help Stock the Dragons Giving Closet

Our NPJH staff has created the Dragons Giving Closet to help our families that may need some extra assistance this holiday season.

If you have any extra quantities of toiletries or necessities, please drop them off at NPJH starting November 26th. The Giving Closet will then provide these items to students in need.

We're looking for items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, combs, brushes, shampoo, conditioner, other hair products like mousse or gel, hair ties, deodorant, q-tips, detergent, razors, shaving cream, baby wipes, body powder, basic first-aid supplies, and lotion. Please bring any of these items off to NPJH when we return from Thanksgiving break.

Opt-in for CSCSHC Text Messages

Did you get text messages from us about our school closure on Thursday? If not, text "YES" to phone number 67587 to sign up.

If you already receive text messages from the district, you do NOT need to complete this process again. Additionally, we encourage all of our parents to double check their parent information in PowerSchool so that the district has accurate contact information for you in case of an emergency.

Please visit our Inclement Weather Guidelines to learn more about how and why we decide to delay or close school in specific weather situations.

November Parent Cafe

On November 27th, NPI will host a Parent Cafe about setting boundaries for children. These Parent Cafes are intended to allow parents to have conversations with each other and counselors about issues they might be encountering at home.
