fpu men's soccer 2019 SEASON PREVIEW

"WITH SO MANY PLAYERS NEW TO THE STARTING LINEUP, WE LOOK TO FIND TEAM CHEMISTRY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS A TALENTED TEAM WITH DEPTH THAT WE HAVEN’T HAD IN MANY YEARS. IT WILL BE UP TO THE STAFF AND PLAYERS TO WORK TOGETHER TO ASSIMILATE TEAM CONCEPTS THAT CAN TRANSFER TO THE STYLE OF PLAY WE WANT. WE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE HARD TO DEFEND, AND WE HAVE A DEFENSE THAT HAS EXPERIENCE IN CONFERENCE AND REGION PLAY." - Head coach jaime ramirez

"TO WIN THE CONFERENCE, IT WILL TAKE AN UNDERSTANDING THAT EACH GAME IS A CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH. OUR STRENGTHS ARE UNITY AND A COLLECTIVE UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS TEAM HAS TO RELY ON EVERYONE TO CONTRIBUTE EACH GAME. LAST YEAR WE HAD TWO OR THREE PLAYERS THAT CARRIED US OFFENSIVELY, BUT WE HAVE MORE THAN THAT THIS YEAR. OUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE RIGHT NOW IS PUTTING PLAYERS IN POSITIONS WHERE THEIR SKILLS WILL BE MAXIMIZED TO THE BENEFIT OF THE TEAM’S POSITIVE RESULTS." - jaime ramirez

"EVERYONE THAT GRADUATED WAS A KEY LOSS for US. I MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT THE ROLE EACH PERSON PLAYS IN PRACTICE, ACADEMICS, CAMPUS LIFE, AND ATTITUDE CONTRIBUTES TO THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM." - jaime ramirez

the schedule

"tHERE ARE RIVALRIES LIKE APU, PLNU, HPU, NDNU IN CONFERENCE PLAY THAT ARE CRITICAL MATCHES. ALL NON-CONFERENCE MATCHES WITH CCAA TEAMS ARE IMPORTANT. HOWEVER, FOR TEAMS IN THE PACWEST TO GET INTO THE TOP 6 RANKING AT THE END OF THE SEASON, EVERY OPPONENT MUST BE GIVEN THE RESPECT IT DESERVES." - jaime ramirez

the preseason

the sunbirds were picked 2nd in the pacwest conference and 25th in the united soccer coaches poll to start the season. tony torres and fellipe souza were both chosen as preseason all-conference players.

"THESE ARE DECISIONS MADE BASED ON LAST YEARS RESULTS, BUT I TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. TIME WILL TELL WHETHER OR NOT WE ARE WORTHY OF THE RANKING. MY HOPE IS TO DO BETTER THAN WHERE THE RANKING GROUPS HAVE PUT US." - Jaime ramirez

milestone watch

goalkeeper patrick timmer enters the 2019 season with 20 career wins. with four more, he will enter the top ten in program history.
in his 28 years at fpu, head coach jaime ramirez has totaled 330 wins. only 11 other active coaches have achieved that mark.

a living legend

jaime ramirez has coached the Sunbird men to a pair of Conference Championships (2013, 2015), eight Golden State Athletic Conference Championships (1991, 92, 98, 99, 2002, 03, 05, 11), five Region Championships (1999, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2013) and nine National Championship Tournament appearances (1999, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018). His 330 wins are the most in FPU men’s soccer history.

His career records as a sunbird athlete for most goals scored (54) and most points scored (134) stood for nearly twenty years. They were finally surpassed in 1999 by striker Edgardo Contreras (61, 141). Ramirez was a four-time Fresno Pacific MVP, four-time NAIA All-District Three award winner and three-time NAIA All-America honoree. As a senior in the 1980 campaign, he led the (then) Vikings to the school's first NAIA District 3 championship.

Ramirez played one season (1982) for the Los Angeles Aztecs of the North American Soccer League, and then returned to Fresno to complete his education. He played 20 seasons in the San Joaquin Soccer League, the last seven with SC San Marcos. He helped San Marcos to the state semifinals in 1996 before retiring in 1997.
