Homestead Act- 1862 law that gave 160 acres of land to citizens who met certain conditions: at least 21 or head of their family as well as a citizen or one filing for citizenship.

Homesteaders- People who farmed claims under the Homestead Act

Hardships people faced included:

natural disasters like floods, prairie fires, dust storms, and drought;

insects which ravaged fields and spread disease like mosquitoes, locusts, grass hoppers, and boll weevils;

and money issues. Crop prices could fall very quickly which could cause debt. An expensive machine that caters to very specific plants could quickly have been deemed useless with the fall of crop values. Housing which was actually livable in could be over 1,000 dollars, and barely any homesteaders could afford that. So...

the homesteaders would live in houses made of sod called soddies. They were very unstable, and oftentimes rattlesnakes could and would live in the rood, but construction cost less than 10 dollars.

Around 18,000 wagons with people who were once homesteaders went back to Iowa from Nebraska in only 1891.
