Men's Shed Vernon Newsletter #25, March 29, 2020

On the Cover: The Corona Virus pandemic calls for "social distancing, innovation, and embracing technology to keep the Men's Shed guys together. This was the first annual Men's Shed Vernon meeting held on ZOOM video conferencing this week. We elected some guys to guide us forward, and got a good sense for the discussions we need to have in the near future.

Our Mission: We Build Meaning & Wellness into Men's Lives By Engaging Hands, Hearts & Minds.

WE ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED. Men's Shed Vernon has suspended all in person group meetings where "social distancing" cannot be maintained. Stay tuned to our website for reopening details. Stay safe for the days ahead.

Hearts: We Did Some Visiting

Men's Shed Vernon & Mental Health Featured on Local Podcast

We recently had an opportunity to exhibit for Men's Shed Vernon, when CMHA hosted the local chamber of commerce "Business After 5" social function.

I met a sharp guy there, named Derrek Mooney. Through personal experience as a result of a family loss, Derrek also became aware of the vital importance of good mental health.

Derrek Got HELP through CMHA Vernon.

With a friend, Derrek started Awareone Apparel to raise awareness, and some funding for Canadian Mental Health Association in Vernon.

Derrek is a BIG basketball fan. Even their team is getting the conversation going by asking the question "What does mental health mean to you?"

Derrek also hosts a local Podcast featuring interesting people he meets in Vernon. More than twenty five guests have spoken about their lives and mental health. Well...one thing led to another, and I found myself on the other side of the microphone for one of those chats.

New friends...

Hands: We Got Some Stuff Done!

Catalina 27 Sailboat Renewal Project

April Deadline Approaching!!

Some of Wade & Julia's friends are "safely gathering" two or three at a time to get their Catalina ready to be launched on Crane Day at the local yacht club on April 18th. If you're interested in helping out as a friend, you could drop me an email note.

HELP WANTED: Now that we have a Shop Coordinator, Hans would like to have some guys come alongside to help him lead. If you feel strongly about shop safety, and have some training or background in this area, we could sure use your volunteer assistance in making The Shed a safer place. See Hans or Email Ray. I'll get you connected.
Back at The Shed. Before the Corona cloud gathered, we did too...
Benches were assembled, Guitar body designed, Bike tow cart design/build, & gravity clock.
The guys got the double drum sander and vac running.

Since the Shed has been Shut, busy guys keep on being busy at home:

Our guys have been building feeders, planters, games, tables, guitars, wooden puzzles for Allan Brooks, boat maintenance, and who knows what all. ALL alone.

Minds - Staying Involved

CMHA Needs Your Help To Phone Visit With Stressed Vernon Guys:

EMail us at the mensshed.ca website or contact Ray V if you would like to make a difference as a CMHA volunteer.

Belonging is a big part of Well Being:

Guys are social. This pandemic has highlighted that point very well. I hear "I miss The Shed" often. Your "opt in" interest in staying in touch through this newsletter is another example of our desire to stay connected.

Here's Why We Need To Be Counted As Members:

New Friends That Care:

Friends are hard to come by, and busy schedules make them hard to grow. Getting together at The Shed makes for introductions and more contact time.

At The Shed, we get to meet guys new in town and guys who grew up here. Guys from all walks of life. We're richer for it...

We get to make cross generation friends. We all have a lot to offer each other.

How Else could you meet these guys?

We get to learn together, when we might not have gone at all if we were alone.

As a recognized group, we have access to resources, and speakers on mental health, physical, health, and on well being as care givers or those who care for us.

Like this package of resources on prostate cancer we just received. I bet you don't talk about this stuff at the coffee shop! We can, and do, at the Shed. You'll live longer...

We Speak & Advocate For Well Being With One Louder Voice:

As Men's Shed Vernon members, we gain the ear of government and community leaders. This enables us to secure funding, and communicate our value message.

We can give back in big ways as Shed members:

To other worthy Non Profits such as Archway Society
We help out local folks who support us when we lend a hand.
We help out one another to do things bigger than any one of us.

So...need I say More?

We need you ...for all these reasons. Help your community, help us guys, help yourself...

Here's How You Can Start:

Join Men's Shed Vernon Today...

Your Membership Will Be A Big Encouragement to All Of Us:

CMHA accounting staff will recognize all $20 online donations to Men's Shed as non receiptable memberships during this Covid 19 shutdown.

Designate your donation to Men's Shed:

Tell Us You Joined:

Just respond to this email. Ray V will give you a shout back for your details.

Then, come join our ZOOM meeting this Monday to meet your new friends. We'll look forward to seeing you at the Shed as soon as we open.

Drop me a note if you would like to add a friend, (or delete) a name to our newsletter mailing list. We won't share it. rverlage@gmail.com
One thing that we WILL share is some quality time, some stories, and some projects when we meet. Don't forget to tell other guys about what's happening at "The Shed"..

We'll SOON be Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, & Saturdays from 9AM - 1PM. Watch our website for announcements.
