Streetsboro Elementary Mrs. Collier - Grade 1 Kent State University - AT&T Classroom - Week 4

Thank you Mrs. Collier & Streetsboro Elementary first graders for participating in Kent State University's AT&T Classroom!

Over the past four weeks the class has explored several programs and applications to support their learning. All of the websites the students used are bookmarked in the class’s Symbaloo site. Symbaloo is a visual bookmarking tool used by teachers to organize websites frequently used by the students for specific subjects and/or projects. Websites bookmarked in a Symbaloo can be accessed from any device with a web browser. The first grader’s Symbaloo webmix can be accessed at the following URL:

Over the past four weeks the class has explored several programs and applications to support their writing and project work including Buncee EDU, ChatterPix Kids, Doodle Buddy, Educreations, Google Slides, Padlet, Pic Collage Kids, and Talkify.

During their literacy block in the AT&T Classroom the Streetsboro first graders have been focusing on adjectives as descriptive words. This past week the first graders created adjective collages using the Pic Collage for Kids app on the iPads. Also known as Pic Kids for short, Pic Collage for Kids is a free app for creating scenes and collages with photos taken with an iOS device. The app was designed specifically for students of elementary and middle school ages as an alternative to the original PicCollage app. Both apps offer access to a tremendous gallery of backgrounds, stickers and customizable fonts for creating photo projects. With Pic Kids, students are able to conduct safe-filter Internet image searches and social media sharing features are removed. The first graders used the Internet search feature in the app to locate a Spring scene to use as the background for their collage. Using the text and sticker tools within the app, the students created captions with adjectives to label different objects and locations in their photo scene.

This past week the first graders were also introduced to a new online resource at the ICT Games website for practicing their base 10 math facts. The Adding 10 Depthcharger is an arcade-style game in which players are on a Navy warship and given the challenge to destroy robot submarines. In order to correctly locate the submarines on the sonar screen, the player must add 10 to each number that appears.

In addition to the Adding 10 Depthcharger game, the first graders have been using several other websites and apps to strengthen their math skills including Sushi Monster, Pop Math Lite, Math Bug Free and Make 10 Plus.
