MLK Jr Day of Service
On Monday, the Troy School District will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a Day of Service. Everyone is welcome as we begin with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the Troy Athens HS Cafeteria. A program honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and work will begin at 9:00 a.m. Service projects begin in the gym following the program. You may choose to write letters to our service men and women; assemble care packages for the military, homeless, and those in need; make no-sew fleece blankets for children, veterans and cancer patients; and/or donate blood.
Screenagers Follow Up
Smith's counselors, Mrs. Hartenburg and Mr. Denyes, will be hosting a Screenagers Follow Up Discussion on Wednesday, January 17, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Smith media center. The documentary, Screenagers, will be shown at Smith at 8:30 a.m. for anyone who was not able to attend the showing this past week. Everyone is welcome--even non-Smith parents.
Smith Coding Club Begins!
Any student interested in Computer Science and Computer Programming, we will be starting an after school club on Monday, January 22, in the computer lab (room 26). We will learn about writing code using the programming languages of Java, Scratch, and Alice. We will also be learning about cyber security topics and cyber security occupations. A Will To Speak Up: What We Should Know About Student Mental Health
As part of the Troy School District’s efforts to attend to the social and emotional well-being of all in the One Troy learning community, we are proud to host a talk from the University of Michigan Depression Center’s Outreach Coordinator Mr. Will Heininger on Wednesday, January 31 at Athens High School for the Athens middle and high school communities including IAEast and TCCHS and on Thursday, February 1 at Troy High School for the Troy middle and high school communities. Mr. Heininger, an accomplished University of Michigan graduate and football player, will share his personal mental health journey, relate mental health issues of importance for students and parents, and provide tips to support someone experiencing mental health challenges. Participants will also walk away with a Troy-centric resource list if any issues need address following Will’s engaging talk.
2018 DC Trip Prices Extended
World Strides is extending the early registration prices through January 31! Say What!! This is a total surprise and we are happy to offer the early bird pricing for one more month to our Smith families. So far we have 104 students signed up and we are getting excited for the 2018 trip.
Registering by January 31 gives you the following benefits:

- You will have more time to spread out payments

We know that registering early before the holidays may have been tough for some families. We hope this extension is helpful for those who want to save some money. Yearbook Order Deadline
You can still order a Smith yearbook for your son/daughter through January 18, 2018. The cost is $20 and can be purchased on PaySchools. Many students have already ordered yearbooks on Schedule Pick Up Day in August--feel free to call Mrs. Vente (248.823.4700) to check if you have already ordered prior to ordering.
Middle School Night at THS Basketball Game
On Friday, January 12, the Troy High Boys’ Basketball program would like to extend an invitation to all Troy middle school students as the Colts take on Southfield A&T. Game time is 7:00. Any middle school student who wears an item of clothing representing their school will be admitted FREE (admission is $5.00 for all others.) In addition, a few lucky students will be selected to shoot free throws during halftime to win a prize.
