Unleash Your Activist!

May 3, 2017

Urgent: Defeat the AHCA

The House is voting on the healthcare bill as early as 10am on Thursday (May 4)—without consultation on what is in it, a leader who doesn't actually know, and no CBO score to measure the cost. And yet, Republicans are switching from “no” to “yes.”

  • In person: rally at the Capitol at noon to protest the AHCA. Information here or find it on the Unleash Your Activist! facebook page.
  • On social media: tell your story, amplify the stories of others, and reach out to family, friends, and acquaintances in key districts to encourage them to act too. NBC News makes it easy to see who stands where. Find the Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of representatives; encourage undecideds to vote no and thank those voting no for their commitment under pressure. Be as visible as possible and get people talking!

Organizing with Unleash Your Activist

May 7 leadership meeting, 8am at Bump n Grind. This is when we plan, so that our events can be all about action! Join us and help figure out how together we can make a difference on an issue important to you. Let Devora know if you can make it.

Electoral Politics 101

May 7 in Rockville: "Electoral Politics 101: A Teach-In on Progressive Change." Half day or full day. Featuring Rep. Jamie Raskin, Maryland delegates, and progressive activists. Learn about different government offices, how to elect progressives, how to campaign for your issues. The format will be short panel discussions with Q&A, including "Running and Winning Elections,” "Understanding the Functions of State and Local Political Office,” and "Recent Struggles for Justice and Resistance.” Tickets here. Questions?

Hogan Town Hall

One of our fellow resistance groups is putting together a petition to get Maryland governor Larry Hogan to hold a town hall event. If you'd like to sign the petition, you can find it here or on the Unleash Your Activist facebook page! They have a very nice explanation of the goals of the event on the form.

Mother’s Day Parade for Liberty & Justice for All

Friday, May 12, 10am, from the courtyard by the EPA to the Department of Justice and then to the Senate Office Building. MomsRising will be delivering to Donald Trump, Jeff Sessions, and every member of the U.S. Senate thousands of Statues of Liberty figures loaded up on strollers. Join this festive and serious action to support diversity and oppose current discriminatory and anti-immigrant policies. More info and RSVP.

Accompany Immigrants to ICE Meetings

May 18, 6-8pm: training session (near Dupont Circle). Many undocumented immigrants have regular check-ins with immigration officers. Complying with these check-ins can lead to detention or deportation. Accompanying an immigrant to a meeting is a way to protect against rights violations, provide moral support, and make sure that family and friends are notified and legal assistance is found quickly if needed. Register for training here.

Unleashed for the Virginia Election

Sunday, May 21. Come canvass for Virginia candidates in the important effort to win Democratic control of the legislature and check the tide of voter suppression and gerrymandering. Let’s help make VA blue! We’ll meet up that morning and carpool. Sign up here to join us.

The smallest of actions can inspire others. What are you doing?

Kudos to everyone who came to the People’s March for the Climate and the May Day action with CASA.
