Reading

In reading, our unit is focused on informational reading. Students will be exploring some topics together, and some topics of choice. Continuums for our previous unit of study will be updated by the end of this week.

This is the essential question for our unit.

During the unit, students will be using a reader’s notebook to document their thinking. This work will help us to track their progress as reader’s in the area of informational reading. Students have been given the responsibility to establish their own reader’s notebooks. Some have chosen to create a digital version, and some have chosen a physical notebook. There are times when we are giving students tasks to do in their notebook, but this notebook is very much their own. If students would like to document reading work they are independently working on, the reader’s notebook is a great place to keep it.

As always, students should be reading at least 20 minutes a day outside of class.

Writing

Writing will be the major focus of this unit of study. Students will be in smaller learning communities this unit in order to better personalize their learning. Students will go through 2-3 cycles of the writing process during the unit, with the goal of strengthening their argumentation skills. The end of the unit will culminate with an action project that students will present to their peers.

The assignments for this unit are posted. They are posted in a way that will allow your student to work ahead if they would like to. All due dates can be found on each individual assignment.
