Much More Than a Dream: The Alchemist By: Andrew Roberts

Thesis: A philosophy known as The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho shows achieving a personal legend takes much more than having a dream. It takes self-guidance, courage and faith which is stressed in throughout the book.

Evidence #1: "And dreams are the language of God. When he speaks in our language, I can interpret what he has said. But if he speaks in the language of the soul, it is only you who can understand (Coelho 15)".

Patrick Henry was an American attorney in the late 1700's who was for becoming the orator during the movement of independence in Virginia. As a founding father, he said this inspirational quote about self-guidance.

"I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience".

Evidence #2: "... that had caused him to become a sheperd, that had caused his recurring dream, that had brought him to a city near Africa... The closer one gets to realizing his Personal Legend, the more that Personal Legend becomes his true reason for being, thought the boy (Coelho 75)".

In the book The Odyessey, Odysseus must embark on a 20 year journey to return home to Ithica to his family but he encounters many struggles along the way. One of them being he needs to escape a cyclops's cave what happen next can only be described as courageous.

"Seizing the olive stake, sharp at the tip, they plunged it in his eye, and I, perched up above, whirled it around. As when a man bores shipbeams with a drill, and those below keep it in motion with a strap held by the ends, and steadily it runs... (Homer 87)".

Evidence#3: "For nearly a year, he had been working incessantly, thinking only of putting aside enough money so that he could return to Spain with pride. Never stop dreaming, the old king had said. Follow the omens (Coelho 63/64)".

This poem written by Nickeisha Samuels called The Journey shows how there is a meaning in everyday life. All you need to do is have faith in yourself and what you believe in.

Until you've walked the road that I've trod,

and pushed your foot in my shoes,

and felt how worn out they are because of the distance I've traveled,

you can never tell me you know how I feel.

I cry every night because I'm human,

and tears are a language God understands.

I laugh every day

without one knowing what's really going on in my head.

I smile every morning because I have life.

I go through every week hoping that things will get better.

I count the months of disappointments,

because I know the years of victory will be sweet.

God never gives us more than we can bear,

and I'm going to continue walking,

no matter how hot the sun is,

no matter how dusty the day gets,

how cold the night is,

and how lonely I feel.

I will always be grateful.

Where there is life, there is hope.

I believe in the plan God has for my life,

and I may fall short, but he never lets me go.

Thank you, Father, for your grace and mercy

that have brought me through.

I'm living this moment because of you

In conclusion, in order to achieve your personal legend, itĀ takes more than having a dream. It requires self-guidance, courage and faith. There were many connections between the books, quote and poem thatĀ involve self- guidance, courage and faith.
