Moments With The Mayor May 2021

Honor Thy father

Father's Day is coming up on Sunday, June 20, 2021. As with last month’s article, I felt that this article should focus on honoring our fathers.

I never really understood what it meant to be a father until I became one. Dad was just always dad. He was always there for me, provided for me, guided me, supported me, and believed in me. He was a hero and made it seem so easy. Dad always had all of the answers and knew everything. Of course, there were times when I had all the answers and knew everything, but he always handled those moments with grace.

Fast forward several years, and my greatest blessings call me “Daddy,” and I am so very blessed to be the father of four (4) very rambunctious boys. Now that I am a father, however, I know it was not easy. Parenting in this age of instant news, technology at our fingertips, and Google is definitely not easy. A different decade brings about a whole new set of parenting challenges. Navigating those problems remains the same: have all the answers, know everything, and handle it with grace. If only we did have all the answers.

The morale of this story is simply to be there for your children, love them, guide them, support them, and believe in them. Cherish those moments, and enjoy the fact that you are their hero. No one has all of the answers ~ not even mom and dad ~ but what’s most important is that we are present in their lives and serve as a strong role model for them.

I am thankful for all of our Bolivar dads who are strong, supportive, and inspirational to the future generation of leaders in our great city. On behalf of the City of Bolivar, we wish all of our dads a great Father’s Day. You deserve it.
