The book their eyes were watching god by Zora Neale Hurston is about identity and reveals her journey as she finds who she truly is.

As one reads more chapters in the book, one begins to see Janie's change in attitude. In the beginning she lets things get to her and does everything her grandmother says. In the middle she begins to feel the freedom after joe dies because he never allowed her to be herself. Throughout the end we see Janie's change in attitude which is impacted by Tea Cake and her love towards him.

Beginning : " She had glossy leaves and bursting buds and she wanted to struggle with life but it seemed to elude her " (Hurston 11)

Middle : " Tain't dat Ah worries over Joe's death, Pheoby, Ah jus' loves this freedom. " (Hurston 89)

End : " It was not death she feared. It was misunderstanding. " (Hurston 179)

Characterization

Janie

Indirect : " Where's dat blue satin dress she left here in ". (Hurston 2)

Direct : " she knew that god tore down the old world every evening and built a new one by sun-up " (Hurston 24)

Indirect : "He could never be dead until she herself had finished feeling and thinking . " ( Hurston 183)

Direct : " He just slapped her around a bit to show he was boss " ( Hurston 140 )

EXPlanation

Before joe died Janie had to dress the way he wanted her to dress. Janie had to wear a head wrap because Joe didn't want her to attract anyone else. After he dies she has to wear black to his funeral but later on we notice the change in her because she takes her head wrap off. Towards the end after Tea cakes death one can see that she's herself because she doesn't even dress up. Instead she wears her overalls. The change in her clothes identify how her confidence becomes stronger as she overcomes struggles and stands up to be the person she's comfortable in being.
