Roll of Thunder Portfolio By: Elizabeth Reichert - Period 2

There were two schools for white children and black children. Both schools were very different by how clean the were and how big they were. White schools were very large and oragnaizied. Black schools were not clean and they were very small. There wasn't much equality back then for schools or how well they were educated.

In the library there must be separate places for colored people and white people. White people can use the library when ever they want, but the color people have more restrictions. They had a separate entery ways for white and colored people. Also the whites had more freedom then the colored people like if what you can bring inside the library or how many books you can get.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a time where the stock market crashed and economy fell. The Great Depression started in the 1920s and 1930s and Americans lost their jobs and were unemployed. It was not easy to find jobs or to work for a living and family's had to travel to places to find jobs. Also there was a major drought at the time which led to farmers not having any crops. This causes extreme dust storms in the middle of the country which was known as the Dust Bowl. The character in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry are affected by Papa going to Louisiana to find a job and make money so that they have land to live on. Also Cassie and Little Man are forced to read old books which were used by the white kids.

The photos show how everything was bad and how people wanted jobs. Also they show when family's travel to get better jobs or to find a better place to live.

Abolishment of Slavery

Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation and he says, " ... all persons held as slaves within a State rebellion against the United States, shall be forever free". The freedom that the Emancipation Proclamation promised depended on the Union military victory. Although the Proclamation deleverired freedom, but it find you deliver freedom through out the nation. Many black men fought for there freedom and fought for the Union. In Roll of Thunder, Hear My. Cry Mama tells Cassie, " When the Civil War was fought Mama Rachel and Papa Luke and all the other slaves were freed, people continued to think that way. Even the Northerners who fought the war didn't really see us equal to white people". ( Taylor 198 )

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

Lynching was their punishment in the South like if they broke the rules then they would get lynched. Lynching is killing someone without a trail in the South. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry lynching is common in the South at this time. Mr. Berry and his nephews were nearly burned to death for being inappropriate to a white woman. TJ was being mob by white men for killing Mr. Barnett, but Mr. Jamison come along to save him. Mr Jamison says, " Jim Lee Barnett and his wife are still alive. Y'all let the sheriff and me take the boy. Let the law decide whether or not he's guilty" ( Taylor 376 ).
