Waddell "A" Truss Bridge By Paul corNwell

You will need:

175 popsicle sticks

2 bottles of Elmers glue

News paper

30 paper clips

A yard stick

A large table

A box of rubber bands

Two boxes of puff tissues

Scissors

1.Spread the news paper out to cover all of the table.

2. Open you popsicle stick package squeeze a small drop of glue onto the flat side of the stick and over lap the two sticks where the glue is by about 1cm do this with sticks until they length of the line is 30inches (use the yard stick) then repeat with a second line let these dry a day and a half. If the sticks slide around use paper clips to hold them down. Label these lines with the number 30.

3. As those lines of sticks are drying we will be moving on and building this sides of the triangles. Move to a different part of the table and squeeze a small drop of glue onto the flat side of the stick and over lap the two sticks where the glue is by about 1cm do this with sticks until the length of the line is 20 inches. One stick near the end will have to overlap more then the rest so it is exactly 20 inches. Make four of theses and let dry for a day and a half. If the sticks slide around use paper clips to hold them down. Label with the number 20.

4. Now you will be building the triangle bisector. Get 5 sticks out and Move to a different part of the table and put a small drop of glue on the the stick and over lap two sticks where the glue is by about 1cm do this with sticks until the length of the line is 13.5 inches (use the yard stick to measure). One stick near the end will have to overlap more then the rest so it measures about 13.5 inches. Make two of these. These will go into the middle of the triangle to give it support and strength. Let these dry for a day and a half. It should look like sticks in the middle of the picture below. If the sticks slide around use paper clips to hold them down. Label with the number 13.5.

5. Now you will be making the angle bicectors to bicect the bisected triangle. These lines of sticks will need to be 11.5 inches. Move to another part of the table. Overlap the sticks by about 1cm put a dab of glue on the end of each stick to secure the other sticks to it. Make 8 of these If the sticks slide around use paper clips to hold them down. Label with the number 11.5.

6. Next you will be making 8 lines of sticks that each measure 7.5 inches. Move to a different part of the table and squeeze a small drop of glue onto the flat side of the stick and over lap the two sticks where the glue is by about 1cm do this with sticks until they measure 7.5 inches. Label these with the number 7.5. It should look the blue highlighted part in the picture below.

7. You will be making 8 lines of sticks that each measure 5 inches. Move to a different part of the table and squeeze a small drop of glue onto the flat side of the stick and over lap the two sticks where the glue is by about 1cm do this with sticks until they measure 5 inches. Label these with the number 5.

8. After you let everything dry, grab the line labeled 30, and grab two of the four lines labels 20. Your making a triangle with the lines labeled 20 as the sides and the 30 is that base. Glue the tip of one side of the line labeled 20 to the tip of the 30 and then put the other line labeled 20 down on the other tip of the 20. Then make a second one with the other 2 lines labeled 20 and the other line labeled 30. Put a paper clip on each tip to hold it in place so it drys correctly. Glue all the tips together at those points it should look like the triangle in the picture below. Let it dry for a day and a half

9. You will be adding the triangle bisectors now grab one of the lines of sticks labeled 13.5. Take the paper clips off the triangles u made early after they are dry the line labeled 13.5 it is going to cut the big triangle in half. Do this to both large triangles with the lines labeled 13.5 so it looks like the picture below. Put paper clips on the freashly glued sticks.

10. After the triangles are dry you going to cut them in halfs again. Get the lines labeled 11.5 and set to cut the triangles in half like in the picture below. Do this with both triangles. Glue them down and use paper clips to hold them down.

11. You will bisecting each of the four triangles in the two large triangles. Get all 8 sticks labeled with the number 7.5. These will be used to cut the small triangles in half your should have two triangles that look like the one below. Glue the tips down and use a paper clip to hold the lines in place.

12. Get out the 8 lines labeled 5 and split then in two to groups 4 in each. Use two sticks to split the tiny triangles in the top of the large triangle, glue theses on. Then use the two lines, labeled 5, left and use them to cut the tiny triangles in the lowers corners in half glue these on. Use the other groups of sticks to do the same to the other large triangle. So you have two triangles that look like the one below. Use paper clips to hold the sticks in place so the don't move.

13. After each of the triangles have dried set one down then set the two puffs tissue boxes about 4 inches apart then line the other triangle up on top of the boxes. Then cut a few rubber bands and tie one triangle to the other triangle pinning the boxes in between them.

Then use the remaining sticks to go up and down the sides and across the base gluing then in to lock the triangles together let this dry. Then cut the boxes up to get them out and your are finished.
