La Mitad del Mundo Quito, Ecuador

“La Mitad del Mundo” means “The Middle of the World” and refers to the geographic location separating the northern and southern hemispheres. At this location, there is a very famous monument of Ecuador.

The monument was constructed to commemorate the first geodesic mission of the French Academy of Sciences. This occurred in 1736 and was when Louis Godin, Pierre Bouguer, and Charles Marie de La Condamine determined for the first time the location of the equatorial line. Unfortunately, their measurements were not correct. Recently, it was discovered using GPS that the middle of the world is actually located 250 yards from the monument. Still, the monument is very famous and many people visit it every year.

In addition to the monument, there are other attractions in La Mitad del Mundo. This map shows the attractions.

The Plaza of the Cocoa goes over the history of cocoa, shows the process of its production, and sells chocolate produced there.

The planetarium offers photograph expositions, model exhibitions, and live conferences. Through the planetarium, the public can admire the different phenomenons of the fascinating universe.

The Plaza Central is the place in the middle of the park of the middle of the world where they have events likes dancing from all of the regions of Ecuador and other events for tourists. Also, the plaza central has a fantastic view of the monument of the middle of the world. It was named the plaza central because it is a plaza that is in the center of all of the merchants and stores where a lot of people visit. Some of the tribes that dance and sing songs in the plaza central are Quichua Andean, Quichua Amazonia, Shuar, Chachi y Achuar.

The Plaza Cultural is an arena in front of the park of the middle of the world and for two days per year they use the plaza cultural for bullfighting. Fiesta Brava is one of the festivals for bullfighting that they have in Ecuador.

In the city of Mitad del Mundo there are several little shops that sell may souvenirs. Some things sold there are ponchos, hammocks, tagua, and many handcrafted dishes. Most of the souvenirs tourists can buy are all made by hand. All the little shops are operated by a group of Quechua Indians. The Quechua work a long time to make these souvenirs very nice. These little souvenirs shops are great for finding very low and affordable prices for high quality. Popular souvenirs to buy there are things made out of the fur of the llama and alpaca.

Most of the different things that tourists can buy here are handmade. This is a wooden tool that helps to make various handmade items.

Also, the public can enjoy the Chapel Museum, Colonial Quito, and the Chiquitus, Ecuador, France, and Guayasamí Pavillions.
