-Roll of Thunder- Portfolio Xander lahti : period 4

-Jim Crow Laws-

-Buses-

Passenger stations were split, as there was a waiting room for only whites (which looked and was better in general) while blacks would get their own room.

-Drinking Fountains-

If a black man wanted to get a drink out in public, he would have to drink from a separate drinking fountain. The fountain would have its own sign, to separate the black's and white's.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION

During the Great Depression the Stock Market crashed in October 1929, which started the worst nation wide depression ever to happen in the United States. Many people across the U.S. invested in the stock market in a hope that they could earn a high Profit. There was too high of a Demand for stock, which lead to stocks highly growing in value between the 1920 and the 1929. Problems began in the Economy, however. This led to a sudden Decrease in the values of the Stock Market. This affected people poorly as it ruined many people's Investments. This also led to a Banking Crisis where plenty of banks failed, and lost all their Money.

These pictures show what times were like in the Great Depression. People lived in poorly made huts, and most people had to work harder to earn Money.

-Abolishment of Slavery-

When slavery ended, this meant freedom to the African American community. “And when the Civil War was fought and Mama Rachel and Papa Luke and all the other slaves were freed” (Taylor 217). This shows that after the Civil War slaves from several states, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Flordia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, stats The Emancipation Proclamation.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

LYNCHING

Lynching is killing in the southern part of the United States of America without reason nor trial. Lynching would almost only happen to African Americans. In the book, Roll of Thunder T.J.'s Dad talks about a boy being lynched. “These folks gettin’ so bad in here. Heard tell they lynched a boy a few days ago at Crosston.” Is one example from the book. Lynching was certainly a horrible thing that happened in the South.
