We Didn't Start the Fire. Jakob helms

1. Harry Truman was an American politician who served as the 33rd President of The United States. He came into office because of the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Harry Truman served from April 12, 1945- January 20, 1953. Something cool that some people may not know about Harry Truman is that he survived an assassination attack. Billy may have included this in his song because Harry was an important individual in the time that he served. ECONOMIC

2. Doris Day is a now retired actress and singer. She began her career in fame as a singer in a band in 1939, when her popularity began to rise. Doris was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a very pretty, very talented woman who was widely known around the world. Billy may have included Doris in his song because she would have been known by many people and people would be able to relate to her. SOCIAL

3. Joe DiMaggio was an American Major League Baseball player who played his whole 13 year career as a New York Yankee. Joe holds the record for the longest consecutive hitting streak in baseball history to this day, at 56 games. Joe first started playing baseball for the Yankees in 1936. Billy may have included Joe in the song because he was a major league baseball phenomenon at the time that he played. He was so good that he still holds records to this day. SOCIAL.

4. Television first came out and was widely being used in 1925. People were amazed by the fact that you could watch your favorite television show or movie. Although television has come a long way since 1925, there are still advances in this area today. Companies are constantly trying to improve the visual and audio quality of their product. When television first came out, there was only black and white tv. Later on in the 1940’s, they made the first colored television. They may have cost a little more, but people sure would pay the extra money to get that colored tv. Billy probably included this in his song because it was the big thing back then. Everyone either wanted, or had a tv. TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTS.

5. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of The United States from 1953 until 1961. He was a 5 star General in The United States Army during WW2 and served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. Eisenhower was elected President of The United States after Harry Truman’s term was up. He served for 2 terms and did many great thing for our country. Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas. Billy probably included Eisenhower in his song because Eisenhower was a significant leader during his lifetime. He was able to witness this man be the leader of The United States of America, as so did many other people who remember this song when it came out or shortly after. POLITICAL.

6. Elvis Presley was an American singer and actor. Known as one of the most iconic singers of all time. He is often referred to as “the king of rock and roll” or simply, “the king.” Elvis was born in Tupelo, MS on January 8th, 1935. He passed away in Memphis, Tennessee on August 16th, 1977. Many people around the world today will know an Elvis Presley song if you play one aloud. Elvis shocked the world with his new sound and the way that music was presented. Artists today are still shocked by the things that Elvis could do or pull off. Billy put Elvis in his song because everyone around the world knows who Elvis Presley is, it draws their attention to hear his name. Many people miss Elvis and the way he sang his songs. SOCIAL.

7. Disney land is a theme park resort in Anaheim, California. Disney land opened to the public on July 17, 1955. It is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. Disney land is still open today and is one of the best theme parks in the world. Many people still go there on vacations or just for a full day of fun. Billy could have included Disney land in his song because it was a big deal back in 1955, and everyone wanted to go there and try it out. CULTURAL DEVELOPMENTS.

8. Mickey Mantle was a professional baseball player who played with the New York Yankees his entire 17 years in the Major League Baseball organization. Mickey played for the Yankees from 1951 until 1968 when he retired from the game he loved. Mickey Mantle is still a well-known baseball player to this day. Mickey was given nicknames such as “the commerce comet” and “the mick”. Mickey was originally born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma on October 20, 1931. Mickey was scouted in high school and drafted into the Majors at only age 19. Mickey was named MVP 3 times throughout his career with the Ney York Yankees. Billy may have included Mickey in his song because mickey was a very good baseball player and will be remembered and know by lots of people for a long time to come. SOCIAL

9. Russians in Afghanistan is when the Soviet Union entered Afghanistan to “protect” Communist interests in the country. Rebels were supported by the United States, and finally after a long, costly war, the Soviets were forced to withdraw from the country. Ironically, the Afghan rebels later used the arms supplied by the US to fight the Americans. Countries all over the world are still not at peace with each other to this day. Billy may have included this in his song because this was something that happened in his life that he may have though was significant enough that either people already know, or should learn about. MILITARY EVENTS.

10. Bernie Goetz was a New Yorker who was concerned about crime in the city. After he got on a subway in the afternoon, four African-American youths approached Goetz and demanded $5 from him. He pulled out a gun and shot all four of them. Then he shot one of the youths again, as he lay on the floor, severing the spinal cord and paralyzing him. Goetz escaped from this tragic event with no harm and was never actually caught by the authorities, but later turned himself in. Many New York citizens deemed him a hero. The case brought about the debate as to whether the people have the right to take the law into their own hands. Goetz was convicted of only illegal possession of firearms and sentenced to 8 months in prison. Afterwards, the youth he paralyzed sued and won a $43 million judgement. People to this day still fight over the fact that people should or should not be allowed to carry guns around the streets that they live in. But the matter of the fact is, that it is every legal citizen’s constitutional right to carry a firearm if they are legally allowed and able to do so. Billy probably included this in his song because it was a big deal when it took place, and is still a big deal to this day. SOCIAL.

11. China’s under martial law is when thousands of protestors marched in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. Many were killed and China went under martial law until order was restored. In the year of 1989, China decreed that any political adversary would be treated as an enemy, and that even lethal force may be used on them. In April of 1989, students starting a march in Beijing wanted more democracy in their country. The march continued until the first week of June, when the military of China came to Beijing and killed hundreds of people who were in movement. Many people still protest current issues to this day and sometimes it is a big deal, other times it is treated as if nothing ever happened. Billy included this in his song because he was alive when it happened and it made world-wide news. POLITICAL.

12. Rock and Roller Cola Wars was when Pepsi and Coke battled for supremacy in the marketplace. Each hired musicians to promote their drink. Coke hired Paula Abdul, while Pepsi had Michael Jackson. They then started to try to outdo each other by getting other musicians and celebrities to help promote their drinks. This took place in the 1970’s and many people today still remember when this happened. Even though both Coke and Pepsi are huge brands now. SOCIAL.
