Full-Time Staff Spotlight: Stephen Eppling

When did you begin working at the Carolina Union?

I started on June 20th of last year (2016) after my wife and I moved to Chapel Hill from Dallas, TX.

What does your job as the Marketing and Content Coordinator entail?

My job entails a lot of stuff, but if I had to synthesize it down to one sentence I’d say: “My job is to tell the stories of the Carolina Union enhancing student life through safe, inclusive and educational experiences.” Those stories are most often told on the web and social media through feature stories and videos. Students will probably come to recognize me as ‘that guy with the camera’, if they haven’t already.

Describe the recent time (2-3 years) before your time at the Carolina Union.

I graduated from the University of Oklahoma (Boomer!) in 2013 with a Public Relations degree. I moved home to Dallas and took a job with the public relations agency, FleishmanHillard and worked there for the next three years. I learned a lot, got to work on cool clients like Google, and loved my time in Dallas. I also met my wife, Hannah for the first time at an improve comedy show. She was performing, and I was front-row with a few of my friends. We grabbed coffee one Sunday afternoon, and the rest as they say, is history.

What are three, two syllable words that best describe you?

Daydream, scattered, curious

Who are your closest relationships with?

Hannah (my wife); Wes, Cary, Devon and Parker (my best friends from college); and Hannah and I's cat, Espi. Note: I am definitely a dog person but unabashedly love this cat.

What is your go-to Bottom of Lenoir restaurant?

As far as frequency goes, definitely Chick-Fil-A. Chick, no pick and a side of fries with Chick-Fil-A sauce. However, I do have a pro-tip for those in need of a grab-n-go meal: Grab one of Med Deli’s Fatayer’s (the flatbread gyros) near the salad bar for about $5, grab a tzatziki from behind the counter at Med Deli, and then stop by the herb garden by the Pit on your way out to pick some fresh basil as a topping. Can’t go wrong with fast, cheap, and delicious.

What is your favorite part about your job at the Carolina Union?

The students. You’ll probably hear that from just about every full-time staff member on the Carolina Union team, and I believe each of us truly means that. The opportunity to work with students that are pursuing a career in communications is why I joined the Carolina Union team. I love getting to work with such talented and creative individuals, learn from them, and share what knowledge I can from my short time in the field.
