Rights of Children in Street Situations A summary of the UN Side event

On Thursday 28th September 2017, CSC supported the Committee on the Rights of the Child in organising a side event to mark the launch of the General Comment on Children in Street Situations.

This event was a celebration for our Network - the culmination of years of work to ensure legal guidance to ensure the protection and promotion of street-connected children's rights.

This photo is from the consultations held in India to inform the General Comment. We wanted this launch event to carry forth the importance of listening to the voices of street-connected children and to reinforce what we learned in our conversations with them.

It was an extremely well-attended event, with States, civil society and private sector present, in addition to CSC Members. Simultaneous translations were provided in three languages (English, French and Spanish).

There were many side events on the topic of human rights and child rights at this time. This was a highly attended event, indicating a real interest in street-connected children's rights.

We had an excellent panel, spanning expertise from the UN, NGOs, governments and the corporate sector as well as the voices of former street-connected children. Here's our panel:

We live streamed the event on our Facebook page, where it received 783 views, and 21 shares.

We also launched our General Comment glossy document including an Annex with a summary of consultations, and a child-friendly guide to the General Comment in English, French and Spanish. You can now download these at streetchildrenresources.org!
We were very pleased that members of the Network were able to join the event in Geneva. We met to discuss the General Comment and what it means for the next stages of our work. If you want more information, get in touch with Lizet, our Advocacy and Research Manager at lizet@streetchildren.org.
In summary, this was an exceptionally successful and well-received event, and a fitting celebration of the achievements of our Network.

Renate Winter and many others commented that, as a Network, Consortium for Street Children was a global force to be reckoned with, primed to work with street-connected children around the world to achieve a better world for them.

We look forward to working with you all to achieve the next stage of our work - to make the words of the General Comment a reality for every street-connected child.
