"The Jock" Stereotype at South Rowan

Problem:This Stereotype of a Jock is viewed in many different ways from people believing that every person who plays a sport is seen as a "jock" or someone who is self centered, arrogant, dumb, and in some cases a bully.

A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing

  • In our research article we found that many athletes think that the accusation of a stereotype is either true or unfound. A stereotype that is presumed to be false is the "dumb jock", the associate athletic director said that athletes are just as academically successful as the rest of their peers. Also to some athletes like Schumacher and Lowry their athletic commitment does not affect their course of study. "I find balancing athletics and academics easier than most people would", Lowery '12, a member of the cross country team at Brown. Athletes are also prone to make friends with other athletes or non-athletes because of their involvement in clubs or other organizations throughout the school.

Looking at our survey, The students here at south rowan think of an athlete/jock in different ways. Some believe in the stereotype and some believe in their own opinions.

Just take a look at these interviews we took around the school...

Solution: We need to raise awareness by promoting the image of athletes and putting up posters to remind people to be positive like the picture below.
