The Drinking Age By: Keiran Zeimet

Introduction: Lowering or keeping the drinking age at 21. Each year there are thousands of kids who drink underage in America because the official age to consume alcohol legally in the United States is 21. While there are some good reasons why this is in place, for the most part it is a ridiculous rule based on the fact that at 18 you become eligible for almost everything except for drinking, most people have already started drinking by the time they are 21, and it cause problems for college students that are unnecessary such as MIPS and under ages.

Reason One: 18 is considered an adult. In the USA you are allowed to be tried as an adult in court, serve on a jury, vote, and fight for your country in war times. If the American government believes that 18 year olds are responsible enough to handle things like going to war or voting for the next president then why are they not responsible enough to drink legally if they are considered adults in all other aspects of their lives. When you turn 18 your parents give you a watch as a tradition and welcome you into the adult world, but what does being an adult mean? What being an adult is all about is making your own decisions and being responsible for whatever you do. As an adult there should be no limitations no one is watching out for you anymore, you are on your own, and you have a right to do whatever you want to your body.

Things you can do before drinking.

Reason 2: The country would benefit. There are over 15 million people in this country that are ages 18 to 20. If all of these citizens are also able to buy booze then the country as a whole would make significantly more money off of the sale of alcohol. The extra money can go too things that the country needs such as schools and hospitals. Over 50% of adults ages 18 to 20 say that they are consistent drinkers and 75% say that they have at least tried alcohol even if they don’t consider themselves drinkers.

Reason 3: Most 18 to 20 year olds are already drinking so they should at least have a safe place to do it. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States .“Although the legal purchase age is 21 years of age, a majority of college students under this age consume alcohol but in an irresponsible manner. This is because drinking by these youth is seen as an enticing "forbidden fruit," a "badge of rebellion against authority" and a symbol of "adulthood."( Ruth C. Engs). regardless of the rules underage students are still going to drink, but because they are not legally allowed to do this would be able to drink in safer environments without having to worry about their surroundings.

Places Teens could be drinking.

Counter argument:The drinking age in the United States is 21 because there have been studies that show it can slow development in the frontal lobes, and leads to a higher percent chance of abuse in the future.

Conclusion: . The drinking age should be brought down to 18 because you have responsibilities as important as drinking at 18, it will make the government more money, and college students wouldn’t get in trouble for getting caught drinking while staying in a safe environment.
