The Cooperative “Reyna del Café de San Juan R.L”, is a non-profit association which is located in the municipality of San Juan del Rio Coco, department of Madriz - Nicaragua, with a coverage of 22 communities.

The main role of COOPAREC R.L, is to provide services to the farmers in the community. This includes financial assistance, quality and productivity improvement, certification services, coffee collection, and the export of Fair Trade and Organic certified coffee.

The Cooperative was founded with the goal of providing convenient solutions to the many economic and social needs of the community.

The cooperative Reyna del Cafe del San Juan R.L. was first organized in 2002. The group sold their coffee to Unión de Cooperativas Agropecuarias San Juan del Rio Coco (UCA San Juan) for 11 years. In 2009, the Coop. reorganized, and was granted legal status. It was in 2014 that Reyna del Cafe del San Juan R.L. decided to focus on their own efforts, and separated from UCA San Juan.

In 2014 the Coop. exported their coffee solely through Peralta Coffees until joining with Exportadora Atlantic S.A., a sister company of Atlantic Specialty Coffee in 2015.

Processing Information

Fully Washed

As this coffee is a fully washed coffee, mucilage is removed by both the pulper and a short fermentation and washing to ensure perfectly clean coffee. Finally, the coffee is dried to 10.5% - 11% moisture.

Madriz, San Juan de Rio Coco

San Juan de Río Coco was founded on October 1, 1965 and it belongs to the Department of Madriz. It extends over 221 square kilometers and the temperature ranges between 22 and 24 Celsius. It has a humid and tropical climate with an average elevation of 900 MASL.

Due to topographical limitations, 90.1% of the area is dedicated to forestry; 7.9% of the area presents an opportunity to grow crops, but with restricted use.

Technical assistance is provided to the members of the cooperative through technicians hired by COOPAREC, R.L. Visits consist of recommendations and transfer of knowledge regarding cultural, biological and organic practices that lead to the compliance in standards of the different certifications.
