Welcome & Investment Guide - 2019 Juliette Fradin • FAMILY DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGrAPHER • DC AREA

"Plus tard il sera trop tard, notre vie c'est maintenant." Jacques Prévert

Documentary photoshoot with Emmanuelle B. Summer 2018. France.

My name is Juliette. I am a documentary photographer based in the Washington, DC metro area who is often caught daydreaming about my native France.

Being between 2 countries, I wanted to remember it all, here and there. I am inspired (and frightened!) by moments that pass by, past that is no longer accessible, change in the family dynamic. Hence my desire to freeze time.

I love to photograph families at home, the epicenter of family life, where childhood memories are formed.

I will capture your story when you are fearlessly you: when you do the things you love to do in the place you love to be.

I will catch glimpses of your family personality when you are in the moment enjoying the simple fact of being together. I love to document the love (and tears) that go into family life, or during a sweet reunion. My style is far from standard posing and cheesy smile. I rather capture a feeling, an emotion, a connection. Your job is to slow down, be in the moment and let it go.

My clients find beauty in the simplicity.

My clients are quirky families who demand something different, something honest + true to real life .They are less afraid than some to let their guard down. They often come from a multicultural background and are inquisitive about the world we live in. They want to step away from the traditional stiff, posed portraits and want to embrace the flaws and uniqueness of each family member: from the newborn baby to the 4-legged companion. My clients are awesomely weird!

By choosing me as your photographer, you choose to celebrate your family life... while keeping the planet greener!

To align with my personal values (I embarked on a low waste journey), 2019 will be a transition to an eco-friendly business. My goal is to reduce my waste, my recycling, and plastic consumption as much as possible by sourcing environmentally-friendly products and companies.

Moreover, with every purchase made from the shop, trees will be planted. I partnered with One Tree Planted to support their amazing work around the globe, one tree at a time.

Storytelling sessions capture your perfectly imperfect life at home and around. I am there, first and foremost to document your family when you are expecting, expanding, living the ordinary and everything in between. It is about creating powerful and real-life images that will make you laugh and bring conversations 30 years from now. It is a radically different approach than studios you would use to quickly update little Johnny's smushy face. We roughly decide on 1 or 2 activities and we go from there. Storytelling sessions are slightly directed. Allow up to 3 weeks after your session to view your images.

.Half-day real life session.

My approach of capturing your family during a Real Life session is far from poses, props and coordinated outfits. I won't tell you to stand closer to the light or to act again for the camera. It's pretty much the opposite: all you have to do is live your normal life and be yourself as much as possible. You need to check your emails, take a nap, do laundry, go grocery shopping? I will tag along (or not). My job is to make the experience as natural as possible, as if we were hanging out together except I am taking pictures along the way. I might join into the fun that your family is having or quietly observe. I would say that half of the time is interacting and the other half is taking pictures.

I shoot mainly at-home or wherever your life takes you, but get things rolling and let the day unfold organically. Just relax, enjoy, love your family and let me capture just that.

Real Life sessions last around 4 hours. Allow up to 6 weeks after your session to view your images.

What's included?

  • A 4 to 5-hour session at home (from breakfast to lunch or afternoon to bedtime)
  • Immediate family members
  • Around 80 to 100 images hand-edited accessible in an online gallery
  • All web-resolution files for printing up to 5x7 with immediate download through an online gallery
  • A gorgeous Moleskine photobook (genuine materials, black cover, rounded corners and ivory paper. Photos are stunning. Every book is happily designed by me.)

Because pixels look way better printed on paper than stuck in your computer.

I am a firm believer in the power of photo albums, frames on the walls and prints passing from one hand to another. How do you want to preserve your memories? How will you transmit them to your children?

Bring your pixels to life.

I recently switched to a new photographic lab and I am in love with my new prints. Your images will be printed on a deep matte paper that really complements my style. They have a clean, white border that really makes a difference.

"Thank you again for the amazing experience and beautiful photos." Kristy.

If you are looking at a modern alternative to traditional canvases or frames, let me introduce you to bamboo prints! They are eco-friendly bamboo panels. The picture is printed on a beautiful deep matte paper and mounted to a solid bamboo board. Each bamboo panel is finished with smooth and distinctive edge with a carved keyhole on the back for easy hanging.

It looks great as a wall center piece for the bigger formats or displayed on a shelf/desk for smaller ones like an 8x10" or 5x7".

How do I reserve a date and what are the payment terms for a session?

As a mother of 2 little ones, I take a limited number of session each month to ensure I allow enough time to my clients from the first inquiry to the delivery of products while also caring for my family. You can send me an email through the contact form on my website (or bonjour@juliettefradin.com) and we'll discuss time and logistics.

I will send you a contract and the invoice. You will pay the retainer fee directly online. Your session is not booked until you have completed and signed the contract and paid the retainer (for storytelling sessions, retainer is $250; $450 for Real Life sessions; $1,000 for One Year sessions.)

Once your session is booked, I will send you a questionnaire asking you some details about your family. This will help me deliver a highly meaningful gallery of photos.

I love your style but I need a more formal portrait to send to grandma! Would you do that?

If its important to you, yes! I follow a documentary approach for my sessions, and there is no script or prompt but we can allow a limited amount of time to get some shots of the family together. Don't worry, they won't be the traditional family portraits. We'll keep it short and sweet and play a game or 2 to ensure we are capturing your uniqueness.

Do you publish my images online? We are a private family.

Your privacy is very important to me and I respect it. There is absolutely no obligation. The photographs I take are for you. I don't want you to hold anything during our time together because you are worried of social medias. This session is about you and your family. Period.

But if you allow me to share some, I will use them on social medias for marketing and promotional purposes related to my photography business (everything is described in the model release). If I am published in a magazine, online or win a contest, I will always reach out to you. It is thanks to clients who allowed me to show their images that I can share my work and attract new clients. Let me know if you have more specific questions.

How do we know your are the right photographer for us?

If you are afraid that the kids won't cooperate and sit still, that your husband will roll his eyes because "yet another photoshoot", and "we need to drive WHERE?...", or that it will interfere with your family schedule (#naptime), then fear not because the experience I offer is the total opposite. No need to pack the kids in the car because *I* come to you, you are in your own environment and you do the things you love to do in a place you love to be. I want to put back simplicity into family sessions.

My documentary style won't please everyone but I am ok with that. When you hire someone, it is not just someone who will push a button while you are looking at the camera or act silly. It is much more than that. You hire someone with a unique vision and you will see your life through someone else's eyes.

And mamas, for once: you will be in the pictures and not hidden behind your camera/ cell phone. Let me show you all the work and love you put into raising decent little humans and hold that family of yours together.

My house is a mess, too dark, too plain, not Pinterest-y...

In an ideal world, we would have a housecleaner, tidy kids, big windows, a white kitchen and we would be living that minimalist life we crave at night. But life happens and as much as we would like to escape the consumerism society, we are surrounded by stuff and artefacts. See it as your memorabilia, traces of your family's story. This is where you live, where your kids love to play and the phase you are in right now. That mug you drink your coffee from or that plastic toy left behind might bring memories to your kids 20 years from now. You never know.

I can work in any kind of light so don't worry about your house being too dark. I will make it work no matter what.

What if it rains, snows, my child is sick, I need to reschedule?

Each client get 1 reschedule date and it is better to let me know as soon as possible.

If the weather does not cooperate we reschedule. But we can totally embrace the moment and shoot in the rain/ snow. It makes beautiful photos as well and something totally unique. Think of a snow ball fight or jumping into puddles followed by a hot chocolate by the fire. Anyway, we will decide what is best for you and your family.

What should we wear?

While this is completely up to you, there are some things/ colors/ textures that photograph better than others. Here is a simple guideline:

It’s better to stay away from very contrasty colors like black and white together, neon colors, big logos/ text that draw away the attention, perfectly matching outfits… Focus on choosing outfits that compliment one another (both in texture and tones). Soft or natural and earthy tones are beautiful and photograph really well. Same for rich colors such as burgundy and mustard. You can wear patterns. Pops of bright primary colors works really well too. Think of different textures (denim, wool, linen, corduroy, cotton) and add a few layers (scarves, vests, hats depending on the weather). And if your toddler is breathing night and day into his Spiderman costume, then we might want to incorporate that into your photos.

That being said, if I arrive and your toddler is still in diapers, or refuse to put on his shirt, that is totally fine too. I love to photograph skin (!) and there is not anything more human than that! Wardrobe changes are always fun to photograph as little ones tends to have strong opinions. These shots will turn out very authentic and will capture your real life.

I like the idea of an in-home session, but will I get any images I can frame for the walls?

You certainly will! Unposed images are the only ones I display at home. They remind me of our travels, the places we visited and bring back all the feelings. Kids love to share their stories and see themselves in pictures. For me, it's another subtle way to say "I love you". Choose a picture that make you feel something, a happy moment that will bring you joy every time you look at it.

Moreover, I have few but stunning products that will enhance your photos. You can enjoy them mounted on a bamboo board (my best seller), or turn the pages of a stunning Moleskine photobook. I recently changed the lab I work with tho offer you gorgeous loose prints if you want to frame them yourself. There are lots of possibilities but at the end what matters is that you enjoy them printed and not in their digital version.

I deliver all the web-resolution files with all my sessions. You can print them up to 5x7" if you want to do it on your own (Use Mpix!). They are perfect to share on social medias too (don't forget to credit me @juliette_fradin_photography). High-resolution digital files are perfect for enlargements so pick your favs.

Do you photograph events?

Absolutely. I will be happy to come to your small reunion or birthday party. I photograph your event using a documentary approach like a photojournalist. I capture key moments, take informal shots of families and friends. There is a minimum of 2 hours and you will get approximatively 30-40 images per hour. Contact me for details.

I've heard you are an eco-friendly business. What does that means?

In September 2018, my husband, kids and I have decided to start this journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle, free of plastic. Discovering that almost all of our waste (recycling included) is going to landfill or is shipped to Africa and Asia to be processed threw me off. It was about time we started playing our part. I want a sustainable lifestyle for my kids that is healthier, simpler, and well-balanced.

For my business, almost everything I use is now made from recycled content, and/or can be composted and - at least- can be recycled. I source products that are as eco-friendly as possible for the planet (preference goes to Made in USA), I wrap your goods in a furoshiki style (traditional Japanese cloth gift wrap), I use packaging that is recycled and recyclable or compostable. Quality and aesthetic are very important to me and it takes time to find products and companies that share these eco-friendly values. But be certain that I try to be as zero waste as possible in my business (and personal life) while still sourcing great products for my clients. I also need you to dispose of the cardboard and paper correctly. Together we can make a difference.

Unfortunately, the only thing that is not recyclable is the photo paper itself. But you will enjoy the photographs and photo-albums for more than one generation. Enjoy them, look at them on your walls, shelves and books!

Thank you for considering Juliette Fradin Photography! I look forward to creating beautiful images for you and future generations.
